As we gather around our Seder tables this Pesach, we are reminded that the story of our people is one of resilience, faith, and the enduring pursuit of freedom. From generation to generation, we retell the journey from oppression to liberation - not only as history, but as a living message of hope and responsibility. Chag Pesach Sameach from the South African Jewish Board of Deputies. Together, may we continue to stand strong, united, and proud.

We were shocked and deeply saddened to learn of the horrific murder of our esteemed colleague and friend Steven Gruzd, obm. His loss will be deeply felt by those privileged to have known and worked with him. The SAJBD benefited immeasurably from the many impressive skills that Steven brought during his years with the organisation. Beyond that, he will be remembered as someone of the utmost integrity, both in his personal and professional life. For all his many gifts, Steven was unfailingly humble and unassuming, a kind, courteous and scrupulously fair-minded man who was as much trusted and liked as he was admired and respected. We extend our heart-felt condolences to Mandy, Lauren and Megen, family, friends and colleagues at this very sad time. May his memory be a blessing and inspiration to us all. Oh man this is tragic news Steven Gruzd was always a consummate professional condolences to his family , colleagues at @SAIIA_info and the South African Jewish Report.
It is with great sorrow that we announce the untimely passing of Steven Gruzd, Head of the African Governance and Diplomacy Programme at SAIIA. An integral part of the Institute, Steve was known for his unwavering dedication to his work and his commitment to the policy community in Africa. We will miss his brilliant mind, his deep camaraderie and his gentle spirit. His absence leaves a significant void at SAIIA and across the continent he served so passionately. Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with Steve’s family, friends and all those who had the pleasure of working alongside him. May his soul rest in peace. 🕊️

We are shocked and horrified by this latest act of terror aimed at British Jewry. Torching Jewish ambulances is reprehensible by any standards. No political belief can ever justify this act of hate. This is the latest in an alarming series of hate crimes against British and World Jewry.

This week, SAJBD National Director @BroadattheBoard Wendy Kahn and Cape Chair Simone Sulcas and Director Daniel Bloch represented South Africa at the Anti-Defamation League’s National @ADL Leadership Summit in New York — the world’s largest gathering of Jewish leaders tackling antisemitism and hate, with participants from 26 countries. Wendy presented on a panel at the conference on South Africa’s current situation on the topic of “One People: How Jewish Communities Around the World are Working Together to Confront Antisemitism and Build Resilience.” The global audience was inspired by how the majority of South African universities have remained safe, inclusive, and cohesive spaces for Jewish students, despite challenges faced worldwide. The SA leadership also participated in a global roundtable with fellow international leadership. The summit highlighted a simple yet powerful truth: when Jewish communities worldwide share experiences and support one another, they become stronger, more resilient, and better equipped to face the challenges of today and tomorrow.

In a time of heightened tension, a conversation between Aubrey Masango and @MaryKluk on Radio 702 reminds us what respectful dialogue can look like. Their discussion on Jewish identity and Antisemitism models meaningful dialogue. As Charisse Zeifert @2JewishZA reflects in her article, these moments of thoughtful, nuanced engagement remain essential to a healthy democracy. They create space not only for understanding, but for listening across difference.
