“Ang bayang tunay na malaya ay makatarungan. Ang bayang tunay na makatarungan ay malaya.” (A truly free nation is a just nation. A truly just nation is a free nation.)
This was the message of Chief Justice Alexander G. Gesmundo as he led the flag-raising and wreath-laying rites in commemoration of the 128th Anniversary of the Proclamation of Philippine Independence on June 12, 2026, at the Museo ng Kasaysayang Panlipunan ng Pilipinas in Angeles City, Pampanga.
Reflecting on his usual reminder on the occasion that freedom is a living thing, Chief Justice Gesmundo, speaking in Filipino, said that because the country’s freedom is alive, the struggle for independence continues even more than a century later in the various fields and efforts through which Filipinos serve the nation.
He underscored that it is everyone’s duty to heed the call to make the nation’s freedom meaningful, as the rights and liberties enjoyed today also carry corresponding responsibilities as Filipino citizens.
This year’s commemoration of the Philippine Independence Day Proclamation holds special significance for Chief Justice Gesmundo, as it will be his last observance of the occasion as the sitting head of the Judiciary. Given the personal importance of the celebration, the Chief Justice said he chose to share a different message: that attaining freedom is not enough.
The more important challenge, he emphasized, is what Filipinos will do with that freedom, how they will use it, and how they will safeguard, preserve, and nurture it.
