✍️ “Premiership teams are not built overnight”
⏪ 2022 “off-season”. Hawthorn had just finished 13th after winning only 8 games. The coach and his list management team knew big change was required for the Hawk’s to start challenging for their next 🏆 Some huge decisions were made.

At the time, Sam Mitchell was accused by some in the media of “tanking” & “cutting the list too deep”.
The coach was smart. He knew patience was required. He openly explained his strategy, taking supporters on the journey.
"This is about building our next phase of talent.
"I have no interest (and I know the players feel the same), to just sneak into the finals. Internally we are working on building premiership standards because only then can we become a premiership team.
"Premiership teams are not built overnight, we want to be in a position where we are competing to win it all when our time comes - whenever that may be."

⏩ 2023 season. Hawthorn finished 16th after winning just 7 games. During the season they beat both Brisbane & Collingwood who went on to play in the Grand Final. They were also competitive against other top 8 sides. The signs were there. Another big off-season arrived.

⏩ 2024 season: The on-field results came. The Hawks won 14 games & finished 7th. They would go on to win an Elimination Final and just miss out on making a Preliminary Final. The coach still wasn’t satisfied.
It would once again be another huge off-season for the Hawks.

⏩ 2025 season: Hawthorn won 15 games and finished 8th. They are now into a Preliminary Final having won 2 x interstate finals. The majority of their recruits from the trade and free agency periods since 2022 have played a crucial role as have some of the draftees.
Whatever happens over the coming week’s, Sam Mitchell and his list management team deserve a lot of credit for sticking with their strategy and for continuing to be ruthless.
Hawthorn may not win the 🏆 this season but their time will arrive soon. The Hawk’s will be challenging for 🏆’s in the years to come.
