The EU’s budgetary coup For the EU’s new multiannual budget the Commission has proposed a framework totalling almost €2 trillion, equivalent to around 1.26% of EU gross national income (GNI) over the seven-year period. The European Parliament, never shy about spending other people’s money, wants to push that to 1.38% of GNI. But neither institution really admits the structural tensions buried in the figures. The EU must service roughly €750 billion in bloc pandemic debt, the repayment of which is now being permanently integrated into the regular EU budget. The Commission’s own proposal earmarks €149.3 billion for repaying the so-called “NextGenerationEU Recovery” and “Resilience Facility” funds — a sum that amounts to nearly 10% of total MFF commitments. This matters because of what it reveals about the true nature of NextGenerationEU (NGEU). What was sold to European publics as an exceptional, one-off response to the Covid crisis is now the fiscal template for the Union’s future. The pandemic fund set the precedent: the EU can borrow on capital markets, distribute grants to member states, and then embed the repayment into the general budget for decades to come — all without anything resembling a proper democratic mandate. This is arguably what the “unprecedented” EU fiscal response to the pandemic was always about: normalising common debt as a mechanism for tilting the institutional balance of power decisively in favour of the Commission, downgrading member states and locking in a structural shift in European integration. Indeed, the EU has since repeated the trick with a €90 billion package for Ukraine, again funded through joint debt backed by the common budget. The “historical exception” has quietly become the norm. To repay its vast debts, the Commission has proposed a package of new levies on companies. But if the new taxes fall short, as is likely, the fallback is a compulsory levy on member states. The existing “Own Resources Decision” — another wonderful piece of EU lexicon — already empowers the Commission to call on national governments for additional GNI-based contributions to cover NGEU repayments, on top of regular programme spending. In other words, if the new revenue streams underperform, the bill lands automatically on national treasuries, decided not by sovereign parliaments, but by the remorseless logic of the EU’s debt repayment. At any rate, EU debt now functions as a de facto tax on member states, bypassing the normal channels of democratic budgetary control. Vanzelfsprekend zit er helemaal geen Hezbollah in Tyre's Christelijke wijk - en toch moeten die Christenen weg. De meeste inwoners daar zijn juist zeer kritisch tov Hezbollah. Maar goed, het Israelische optreden in Libanon gaat allang niet alleen meer om Hezbollah. Het gaat om het permanent verdrijven van miljoenen mensen, het verwoesten van hun huizen, het creëren van zoveel mogelijk vluchtelingen in de hoop dat er een burgeroorlog begint tussen Shia, Christenen en Sunni waardoor Libanon volledig implodeert en ten onder gaat aan geweld, anarchie en sectarische waanzin. Alsof je bewust bijenkasten omver gooit. Zo'n verzwakt en tot de grond toe afgebrand Libanon vormt de komende 50 jaar geen bedreiging voor Israel, waardoor Israel weer 50 jaar lucht krijgt. Dat is de echte reden van dit alles. In Gaza, West Bank, Libanon, Syrie en Irak en Iran. En als Egypte, Jordanie, Turkije en Pakistan een te grote mond hebben in de toekomst, gaat dat scenario ook daar plaatsvinden.

The European "five conditions" for peace talks are tantamount to Russian capitulation: 1. Immediate ceasefire 2. The current contact line becomes the starting point for negotiations. Ukraine can join NATO. 3.Legally binding security guarantees, including the deployment of foreign troops in Ukraine. 4. Russian assets are used to compensate Ukraine 5. Deal requires the consent of EU and NATO member states *** The objective of European leaders is to prolong the war and pull the US into a more direct role. Toward this end, the narrative being developed is that the Europeans and Zelensky want negotiations, while Russia does not. Russia has made it clear since 2014 that restoring Ukraine's neutrality by ending NATO expansionism is a requirement for ending the conflict, while also demanding territorial concessions as a result of the war. The ceasefire will be used to rearm and regroup to prolong the war, the security guarantees and deployment of foreign troops undermine neutrality, and Russia will not accept giving up the money that was stolen. There is zero chance that any of these points can be met as the condition for peace talks. However, that is the point of setting such conditions for peace talks. The objective is to keep the war going, but manage the narrative after more than 4 years of boycotting diplomacy. Expect a lot of headlines about how European leaders are pushing for peace, only to meet resistance from Moscow.

CNN and New York Times seem to have liked Zelenslyy's open letter to Putin. As a Ukrainian, I did not. Zelenskyy’s open letter to Putin reads more like a scripted public statement than a genuine attempt at dialogue. If the goal were truly to end the war and find common language, it would not have been broadcast as performative rhetoric, seemingly crafted for audiences rather than for developing some mutual understanding. Four and a half years of brutal fighting have already proven Ukraine’s strength beyond doubt. Our people have shown remarkable resilience; nothing more needs proving to anyone. At this point, continued political defiance serves only to extend the suffering. True leadership, rooted in human values, requires setting aside ego to sit down, listen, and speak without attempts to offend and flirt with radical ideas. Leaders who value their nations’ futures must prioritize saving lives over public posturing. Every extra day of war claims more sons, fathers, and futures — a tragedy both sides must confront with solemn realism. Instead, the letter reveals the stance of an offended child: indignant, detached, and seemingly unaware of the full human catastrophe. It places personal image above the moral duty to spare people further loss. In the end, wisdom lies not in theatrical strength, but in the humble courage to choose negotiation and preserve life.
