The United Nations is considering deploying approximately 900 Sri Lankan troops to Haiti as part of an international security mission. This would not be the first time Sri Lankan peacekeepers have served there. Between 2004 and 2007, Sri Lankan military stationed in Haiti were implicated in the sexual exploitation and abuse of children. Investigations found the abuse to be widespread and systematic, leading the UN to repatriate a Sri Lankan contingent. For many Haitians, this remains a stark reminder of the harm that can occur when peacekeepers abuse entrusted power.

As investigators continue excavations at the mass graves site – where more than 250 human skeletal remains have now been recovered – Massagé reflects on the continued denial of truth and justice for Tamil victims of wartime atrocities. The third phase of excavation at the Chemmani mass grave has commenced today. The excavation work, which had been temporarily halted in September last year, has now resumed. Today’s excavation activities are being carried out under the supervision of Jaffna Court Magistrate S. Lenin Kumar. At the conclusion of the second phase of excavation last year, a total of 240 human skeletal remains were identified, of which 239 have been fully exhumed. #Chemmanimassgrave #Chemmani2026 #Jaffna
