[Daily Korea] 260616 Nexon's NDC 2026: In an AI Era Where Implementation Is Easier, Competitive Advantage Lies in Context
Nexon Developer Conference (NDC 2026) Opens
Keynote speeches delivered by Nexon CEO Lee Jung Hun and Nexon Korea CEO Kang Dae Hyun
CEO Kang stated, "It is clear which approach will move users emotionally. What creates that difference is context.. The living relationships we have built with users over time and the trust created through those interactions ultimately become a source of competitive strength. I would like to call this 'context capital.'"
Kang said that context capital accumulates not only for game companies but also for players themselves. As an example, he cited the collaboration between BTS Jin and MapleStory, which attracted a massive number of users. He also mentioned that tickets for a special event held at Lotte World Adventure sold out in just 30 seconds, describing both cases as moments when 20 years of accumulated context suddenly burst into the spotlight.
Kang stated, "There is one thing we must not overlook when it comes to context capital. The passage of time alone does not automatically turn it into an asset."
Borrowing the financial concepts of simple interest and compound interest, he explained that how a game company utilizes its context capital determines whether experiences from previous games can improve the quality of future titles. Likewise, from the users' perspective, experiences within a game can expand beyond the game itself, generating value that grows like compound interest.
Kang emphasized that context capital is not something that emerges solely from the long accumulated expertise of major game companies. Rather, it is something that is created together with users over time.

🎮Nexon Korea CEO Kang Dae Hyun: "150,000 Concurrent Users for the MapleStory x BTS Jin Event, and the Lotte World Collaboration Sold Out in Just 30 Seconds!"
[This Is Game] [NDC 2026] CEO Kang Dae Hyun: "Context Is the Real Asset That AI Cannot Create"
Kang Dae Hyun, Co-CEO of Nexon Korea, shared in-depth insights on the topic: "In an era where AI has made implementation easier, what do we compete on?"
Kang explained that these contextual assets, or what he calls "context capital," are accumulated on both sides: by those who create content and by those who enjoy it.
For content creators, context is reflected in things such as Larian Studios' accumulated expertise in CRPGs, FromSoftware's long established philosophy on game difficulty, and Nintendo's dedication to gameplay feel and the know-how it has built over the years. It represents the accumulation of experience, technology, and data, as well as the passing down of an understanding of genres and player preferences.
Kang noted that Nexon has experienced this phenomenon firsthand. The MapleStory x BTS Jin event attracted 150,000 concurrent users, while the Lotte World collaboration event sold out in just 30 seconds. According to Kang, these are also examples of the "context" created and accumulated by the players who enjoy the content.
