Kirundi and Kinyarwanda are actually two varieties of the same language. But for political reasons they want to be distinguished. This also happens in other parts of the world.

Could 2025 be the year I make it to Brazil? Who wants to help me learn Portuguese so I’m ready for the pagode? 🇧🇷

Today in 1972, Roberto Clemente is killed in a plane crash while attempting to help Nicaraguan earthquake victims. He died as he lived, with love for others and character. May his legacy set the example for all of us as we head into the New Year. #RIP

one of our better cultural customs is teaching English-speaking children the "Frère Jacques" nursery rhyme and then letting them just go buckwild with vaguely-French sounds

There’s enough Nollywood & Kannywood on @netflix that I should be able to filter out Yoruba & Hausa language movies. It’s not even an option. 😤😩

The Japanese girl studying English is so funny that I can't help but laugh along with her.🤣🤣🤣

Just had to step in and help a Spanish speaking tourist get to the airport because the Port Authority terminal was giving her the WRONG directions with no details. I’m not having this girl leave with an impression of New Yorkers like that. 😤

I think it’s about time in my life that I commit all of the world capitals and country flags to memory. I know probably 80% of each but I’m not winning any trivia contests, yet lol

I can get with a lot of British English and just accept that we speak differently but reading “drink driving” instead of “drunk driving” always gets to me! It just looks like a typo whenever I read it 😂

Old me: Whoa, I had a conversation in Italian yesterday and one in French today! I’m so shocked! I can’t believe it!! New me: I worked really hard for years to be able to do this. Stop being shocked because I’ve earned it 👏🏾💅🏾 Daily Affirmations 😂

A question I’ve asked myself for years. 👀Indian languages are SO beautiful 😍 I wish I could decide on one to learn. Glad to see so many people in the replies talking about learning a few of them!
Is there anyone on #langtwt even considering learning any language from the Indian subcontinent? For some reason it feels like there’s nobody in this group that’s interested in languages from that part of the world.

Nobody thinks I have a New York accent, despite living all my years here. But, trust me, I definitely have it. It just depends on who I’m speaking with and/or how tired I am.

Next week I’m resuming Italian classes and I’ve forgotten how to speak the language. In nearly 6 months, I feel like all my hard work was wiped out by French. But, I believe in muscle memory so I’ll be in full Italian mode for the next 7 days 😂

I’ve been off and on with Italian for 23 years so maybe it won’t be that bad. It IS definitely time to stop screwing around and drill Italian into my brain, though.

Update: It went so much better than I anticipated 🩷 Why was I so anxious when my brain has been wired for Italian for 2 decades? Feeling so, SO much better!
