Ricky Jackson lost 39 years, 3 months, and 9 days of freedom due to a wrongful conviction that changed his life forever. He was just 18 when convicted in Cleveland in 1975 based on testimony from Eddie Vernon, who was 12 years old at the time of the 1975 crime. With no physical evidence, the case fell apart. After nearly four decades, he was exonerated and released on November 21, 2014. Jackson served the longest wrongful imprisonment of any exonerated defendant in U.S. history. He received state compensation and settlements totaling several million dollars, but nothing can replace the lost time with family. Instead of bitterness, Jackson chose forgiveness. His story is a powerful reminder of resilience and the importance of justice. (Photo: Ricky Jackson)

Today, six years ago, the world's attention was captured because we all witnessed another Black man who got murdered by law enforcement. Numerous Black people have been murdered by law enforcement, but this murder was different. It awakened the world like it hadn't ever before. And because of this tragic murder, it became one of the primary focal points for the Black lives matters movement. Do you recall where you were? #georgefloyd #murder #nojusticenopeace #policebrutality #bullying #texas #nba

Elijah McClain should have been celebrating his 30th birthday yesterday. He should be alive today. Elijah McClain was a 23-year-old Black man who died at the hands of police and paramedics on August 24, 2019, in Aurora, CO. He was walking home from a convenience store, wearing a ski mask because he had a condition that made him cold, and had not committed or been accused of any crime. After a 911 call reported a “suspicious person,” officers stopped him, put him in a chokehold, and forced him to the ground as he repeatedly said he was just trying to get home and had done nothing wrong. While he was restrained, paramedics injected him with 500 milligrams of ketamine, a dose later shown to have been calculated based on a significant overestimate of his weight and far higher than what would have been appropriate for his small frame. He went into cardiac arrest on the way to the hospital, was declared brain dead days later, and died on August 30, 2019. #racism #policebrutalityawareness #policebrutality #walkingwhileblack #NoJusticeNoPeaceProsecuteThePolice

We remember. On May 14, 2022, 10 Black people were tragically gunned down while shopping at the Tops Supermarket in Buffalo, NY. Racially-motivated hate violence is on the rise and remains a stain on our democracy. #buffalonewyork #gunviolence #blm #blacklivesmatter

Nine years ago today, 32-year-old Philando Castile was pulled over by a police officer for a broken taillight outside of St. Paul, Minnesota. Philando was a licensed gun owner who informed the officers that he was exercising his right to carry. The officer responded by shooting him in seconds. Philando worked as a cafeteria supervisor at a nearby elementary school. His mother, Valerie, said he “was loved by his coworkers and the children he served… He knew all 500 children by name, their allergies and PIN numbers… He was an extraordinary person.” A traffic stop should not be a death sentence for Black men but, in America, it’s an all-too-common reality. We remember Philando and hold his loved ones in our hearts as we fight to end the scourge of gun violence that disproportionately takes Black lives. #BLM #police #gunviolence #philandocastile #murder #neverforget

Never forget! Private First Class LaVena Johnson, 19 years old. She was found dead in her tent in Iraq. She had a broken nose, black eye, loose teeth, burns from corrosive chemicals on her genitals to cover up the evidence of rape and a gunshot wound. 🚨💔 AN UNIMAGINABLE TRAGEDY — 8 CHILDREN LOST IN ONE DAY 💔🚨 This is the kind of story that stops you in your tracks… the kind that doesn’t feel real, but heartbreakingly is. Today in Shreveport, Louisiana, a home became the scene of a devastating loss that has shaken an entire community. Eight children… Just babies, ages 1 to 14… All gone. Authorities say the person responsible was someone they trusted most — a father now accused of taking the lives of his own children before fleeing the scene. The situation escalated into a police chase that ended with his death. But the pain doesn’t stop there… Their mother, Shaneiqua Elkins, is still alive — injured, hospitalized, and fighting for her life. A mother now facing the unimaginable… waking up to a reality no parent should ever have to endure. Ten years together. A family built over time. And in one moment… everything gone. Some reports suggest she may have been trying to leave — a detail that makes this tragedy even heavier to process. Eight innocent lives. Eight futures that will never be lived. 💔 This isn’t just news… this is heartbreak on a level words can’t fully capture. Keep her in your prayers. Strength is all she has right now. 🕊️Pull through, Shaneiqua. We’re praying. #parents #parenting #blacklivesmatter

R.I.P. Organ harvesting. 💔 Her Body Was Found In The Hospital Without Her Skin & Eyes: Say Her Name 💔 Tonya Walker, a 51-year-old California woman, was found deceased months after her death in a Dignity Health hospital, only after a state audit revealed her remains had been stored at an off-site facility without the family’s knowledge; when her loved ones finally located her body, they discovered her skin and eyes were missing despite her never having consented to organ donation, and the hospital is now being sued amid allegations of gross negligence, failure to notify the family of her death, and causing them immeasurable emotional distress. 🕊️ RIP Tonya Walker 🕊️ #RIPTonyaWalker #SayHerName #GoneTooSoon #CaliforniaNegligence #MedicalMalpractice #InstitutionalNeglect #JusticeForTonyaWalker #RespectTheDeceased #HumanRights #femicide #blackfemicide #americancrimefemicide
