This Republic Day, as the new Padma Awards list is announced, one quiet but powerful message stands out.
Only three doctors from the field of medicine.
And none from Delhi.
In a country where for decades proximity to power corridors, institutional clout, and “who you treat” often mattered as much as what you contributed, this signals something deeper:
👉 The Padma in Medicine has decisively shifted from being relationship-driven to being value-driven.
👉 From access to VIPs to impact on millions.
👉 From elite circles to extraordinary contribution.
Look at the pattern over the last decade.
From Dr. Duvvur Nageshwar Reddy building world-class gastroenterology and endoscopy from India,
to Dr. Dilip Mahalanabis (Posthumous) whose work on ORS saved millions of lives globally,
to Dr. Jose Chacko Periappuram performing India’s first successful heart transplant,
to pioneers like Dr. Balram Bhargava, Dr. Bhimsen Singhal, Dr. Chandrakant S Pandav (Iodine Man of India), Dr. Mammen Chandy,
and many others who created institutions, specialties, and scientific legacies that will outlive them.
What unites them is not geography.
Not social capital.
Not the number of Presidents, Prime Ministers or Ministers/ MPs they treated.
What unites them is:
• Relentless scientific excellence
• Institution-building
• Pioneering new superspecialties
• And a deep, often understated, philanthropic commitment to society
The old belief that “Padma is for the elite” is steadily being dismantled.
So is the myth that treating VIPs is the fastest route to national honours.
The last decade clearly establishes a new doctrine:
Only excellence, coupled with selfless contribution and creation of lasting medical value for society, will be acknowledged.
Not influence.
Not proximity.
Not entitlement.
On Republic Day, that is a reassuring message for every young doctor, researcher, surgeon, and clinician in India:
Your work will be seen.
Your impact will matter.
Your science and service — not your connections — will define your legacy.
