DC-based artist Tammy Barnes (@tbarnescreates) served as lead muralist for a newly installed community mural celebrating the vibrant life of Southwest DC. Barnes worked with an all-female mural team: mural assistants Kaylee Daryl, Porsche Major, and Lauren Rust, and mural apprentices Kira Lee, Donnie Graham, LaNia Roberts, and Lauren McConnell.
The mural is now on view to the public near the Delaware Ave SW entrance of Lansburgh Park.
Southwest residents attended two community events that offered opportunities to participate in collaborative mural painting activities, helping bring the mural to life through a large-scale paint-by-number design of playful imagery and bold color. The final artwork features four panels forming the letters S W D C, each inspired by elements of nature, wildlife, and imagination, and a nod to 90's style typography.
A signature board displayed alongside the mural captures the many community members who contributed their time and creativity to the projectβmarking this artwork as a truly collective effort.
Together, we created a mural that reflects the creativity of our community.
