From the various ministries to the government at large, the current Lebanese government is among the worst in the country's history -- for reasons that extend far beyond its dealings with the enemy. New piece out tomorrow ⤵️

في الجزء الثاني من سلسلة "الوثائق السرية للأحتلال الفرنسي" الذي صدر الأسبوع الماصي فصل طويل عن الثورة السورية الكبرى عام 1925. هذه الصورة هي للقصف الفرنسي لبلدة راشيا، التقطها اثناء القصف المصور الأيطالي المقيم في دمشق لويجي ستيريوني. من القرن الماضي الى القرن الحاضر الأجرام بحق شعبنا متواصل. تعددت جنسيات الغزاة والأجرام واحد.

وثيقة فرنسية تتحدث عن شراء بعض الصحافيين والسياسيين في بيروت من قبل الوكالة اليهودية. نشرت الوثيقة في المجلد الثاني من كتاب سلسلة" الوثائق السرية للأختلال الفرنسي" الذي صدر الأسبوع الماضي. بيروت، في 9 كانون الثاني 1930 جهاز المعلومات المركزي ـ المكتب الثاني. القسم الأوَّل، نشرة المعلومات رقم 14. شؤونٌ صهيونيَّةٌ ـ السيد كالفارسكي وصحافة بيروت: وصل من القدس إلى بيروت في 3 كانون الثاني 1930 السيد كالفارسكي، الزعيم الصهيونيُّ وأحدُ قادة اللجنة التنفيذيَّة الصهيونيَّة في القدس. وبعد أن أمضى خمسة أيَّامٍ في بيروت، حيثُ كان ضيف صهره كولبير، استقلَّ السيد كالفارسكي البارحة سفينة أنغكور Angkor متجّهاً إلى لندن. في أثناء إقامة السيد كالفارسكي في بيروت، بلغنا أنَّه استأنف مباحثاته مع السيد خبَّاز، مدير «لوريان» (انظر النشرة رقم 474 بتاريخ 26 كانون الأوَّل 1929) ورياض الصلح .وبلغنا أنَّ آخر اجتماعٍ له مع خبَّاز كان حاسماً، وانعقد يوم الإثنين 6 كانون الثاني 1930 في مكتب توفيق مزراحي في شارع باب إدريس، وحضره السيد مزراحي (وهو صهيونيٌّ يدير وكالة مزراحي للدعاية)، وبلغنا أنَّ السيد كالفارسكي قد عبَّر للسيد خبَّاز عن شكره وعن شكر الكولونيل [فريدريك] كيش (؟)، رئيس اللجنة التنفيذيَّة الصهيونيَّة في القدس، على موقف الحياد الإيجابي الذي تتَّخذه صحيفة «لوريان» تجاه الصهاينة في الإشكاليَّات اليهوديَّة-العربيَّة. بلغنا أنَّ السيد كالفارسكي أضاف بعد ذلك: «هنالك مصالحٌ مشتركةٌ بين القضيَّتين الصهيونيَّة واللبنانيَّة؛ فكلاهما انتصرتا أو يجب عليهما أن تنتصرا - الصهيونيَّة في فلسطين والموارنة في لبنان - على قوَّتين متعارضتين: الإسلام والاستعمار؛ لذلك، مصالح «لوريان» في هذا الصدد هي عينُها مصالحنا». وبلغنا أنَّ كالفارسكي وخبَّاز قد وقَّعا بعد ذلك على اتفاقٍ التزم بموجبه السيد خبَّاز بالامتناع عن أيّ إعلانٍ يتضمَّن أيَّ معاداةٍ للصهيونيَّة في صحيفته، بل ربَّما بالدفاع إلى حدٍّ ما عن مبادئ الصهيونيَّة. عبر هذا الالتزام، بلغنا أنَّه قبض من كالفارسكي شيكَّين اثنين، قيمة كلٍّ منهما 300 جنيهٍ فلسطيني، يقبض قيمة الأوَّل بعد ستة أشهرٍ، ويقبض قيمة الثاني بعد تسعة أشهرٍ من البنك البريطاني-الفلسطيني. بلغنا أنَّ السيد كالفارسكي قد عبَّر عن رغبته في أن يُوقَّع على الاتّفاق بحضور قنصل إنكلترا، لكن أمام رفض السيد خبَّاز القاطع، اضطُر لقَبول أن يتمَّ من دون شهود، باستثناء السيد توفيق مزراحي. وبلغنا أنَّ كالفارسكي التقى في السابع من كانون الثاني 1930 مع رياض الصلح في منزل السيد كولبير، وهو صهيونيٌّ، وصهر السيد كالفارسكي (حي الزيتونة، جوار شارع الفرنسيّين). وبلغنا أنَّ رياض الصلح قد طلب من كالفارسكي مبلغاً قدره 400 جنيهٍ فلسطيني لإرسالها إلى خ. [خير الدين] الأحدب، يتعهَّد بموجبه بالامتناع من الآن فصاعداً عن نشر أيّ مادَّةٍ معاديةٍ للصهيونيَّة في صحيفته «العهد الجديد»، وهي كما نعرف صحيفةٌ قوميَّةٌ عربيَّة، وأنَّ كالفارسكي قد وعد بأن ينظر إيجاباً إلى هذه المسألة، وبأن يدفع بأيّ حال في أثناء زيارته التالية إلى بيروت مبلغاً من المال إلى خير الدين الأحدب. وفي نهاية المطاف لم يُتَّفق على أيّ شيءٍ إيجابيٍّ بين رياض الصلح وكالفارسكي. من المعتقد أنَّ الأشخاص الذين علموا بتصرّفات كالفارسكي، وهم متعاونون معه على كلّ حال، هم: توفيق مزراحي وجاكوب فرانكو، وكلاهما صهيونيَّان، وربَّما ينبغي أن يُضاف خبَّاز إليهما.

Hard for me to exaggerate the intensity of the wails and the gnashing of teeth from Israeli "ideologues", from the hard right to the center left, who cannot believe "Trump's betrayal". It is impossible for Israelis to think of their actions as having consequences. Signing this deal may be the most sensible thing Trump has ever done. Israel is an unwelcome albatross around his neck. He has never been in thrall to Israel and zionism. He has found Netanyahu to be a disrespectful destabilizer, an agent of harm to Trump's interest. Trump may change his mind every hour but that is part of the power dynamic of bullies. I do believe his mind is now made up. There is no telling what horrors will come to pass in Lebanon and in Gaza as Israel is allowed to continue its genocide and ethnic cleansing. Still, on one front a taboo has been unthinkably breached. Israel has been told off. Israel has been called out. This might be for all the wrong reasons. It doesn't matter one bit. You've heard it here countless times. Israel is corrupt and hollow. It is weak. Israel cannot go it alone (I wish I could translate the anguished cries of a few settler ideologues about the response we must be preparing, a response to shake up the world), Israel's gaslighting should and can be stopped. It is not inevitable. Israel must be brought to justice but Israel can and should be ridiculed mercilessly. Israel is the globe' s current hub of evil. Evil can also be pathetic.

🏦 Lebanese officials are quietly examining whether part of the country’s gold reserves (a national asset) could be used to help fund the return of bank deposits, according to information obtained by L’Orient-Le Jour. The idea remains at an early stage, and no decision has been made. The aim is to preserve the government’s pledge to repay up to $100,000 per depositor over 4 years (covering around 84% of trapped deposits, and estimated to cost around $20 billion). Selling Lebanon’s gold has long been controversial and taboo, but the idea has resurfaced frequently in recent debates. My latest column, on the pickle Trump has got himself into with Iran and Israel.

Thursday morning, an Israeli airstrike struck the home of Mona Khalil in Mansouri, South of Lebanon. The home itself was modest. But what it sheltered was extraordinary. For decades, while many spoke about protecting nature, Mona lived that commitment every single day. From her small house overlooking the sea, she became the guardian of a coastline, the protector of countless sea turtles, and a voice for creatures that could not speak for themselves. She chose to stay. She stayed through uncertainty, through fear, through danger. She stayed because the beach she watched over was not just a stretch of sand. It was a sanctuary. A place of life. A place worth defending. Mona was seriously injured and her assistant suffered burns. Both are thankfully in stable condition. Yet the tragedy goes far beyond their wounds. With war reaching a woman whose life’s mission has been to protect life, something deeper is injured, a part of our humanity is wounded. Violence does not distinguish between a fighter and a conservationist, between a military position and a nest of endangered turtles, between those who destroy and those who dedicate their lives to preserving. Mona Khalil spent years protecting one of Lebanon’s most fragile treasures. Today, it is Mona who needs protection. And perhaps the greatest tribute we can pay her is to ensure that her courage, her mission, and her love for this land survive long after the smoke has cleared ❤️🇱🇧 #lebanon #humanity #truth #worldenvironmentday2026

This latest joint statement on the high-level trilateral meeting held yesterday between the US, Israel & Lebanon, and which was approved by the Lebanese govt, is not only awful, but dangerous & disgraceful. Awful because the Lebanese govt signed off on a statement that conditions a "ceasefire" on Hizballah ceasing fire & withdrawing from the South while Israel continues to occupy it, with nary a word on Israeli withdrawal from Lebanon. Dangerous because the Lebanese govt signed off on language that states that (the US views that) Hizballah is an enemy of Lebanon. How far away are we from the Lebanese govt saying outright that Hizballah is an enemy of Lebanon? What about its supporters, who represent a sizeable chunk of the country? Disgraceful because apparently, the Lebanese govt reaffirmed that they have no hostile intent toward Israel, eventhough Israel has killed & wounded tens of thousands of Lebanese people over the last three years, and continues to slaughter dozens of Lebanese every day. Literally one of the worst statements approved by any Lebanese govt, ever. And that's saying a lot.

The treacherous Lebanese government wants to wage war against the defenders of the land rather than its occupiers. Just like in 1983, history will not be gentle on those collaborators.
