Last week, the first signs of #WestNileVirus activity were detected in #YoloCounty after a dead bird collected in Woodland tested positive for the virus.
Why do we test dead birds? Birds play an important role in the West Nile virus cycle, & some species can become sick & die after becoming infected. Testing dead birds helps us identify where the virus is circulating & provides a warning that activity may be increasing in an area.
As mosquito season continues, reporting dead birds helps support surveillance efforts and protect public health throughout Sacramento and Yolo counties.
