Happy News for a Happy New Year! 🥳Last night was the *first* time the historic State Capitol fountain flowed and was open to the public in 15 years (!). Built in the 1920s, it's been an empty bowl since 2010. To learn more, check out our 2014 story: sactownmag.com/troubled-wate…

Great reporting by @ZavalaA. In 2020, we were also stonewalled on the Annex costs. When we asked how much a private underground garage for legislators would cost, the facilities mgmt director said she "didn’t know... and didn’t know who would know." Story: bit.ly/48N6XP5

New: I asked Gov. Gavin Newsom & AG Rob Bonta if it’s appropriate CALeg continues to withhold records & updated cost of Capitol Annex Project. Newsom turned to Bonta: “you’re my attorney” “I don’t think it’s appropriate, they should provide the information period full stop”

Here's how we can produce less plastic waste in our region: sactownmag.com/think-global-…
21 Jul 2025
The U.S. produces more plastic waste than any other country in the world. Last year, more than 35,000 tons of it was shipped to Malaysia, which received more discarded plastic from rich nations than any other developing country. But in June, Malaysian leaders effectively banned future shipments. @johnyangtv sat down with @AnjaMBrandon, director of plastics policy at Ocean Conservancy, for more. to.pbs.org/3Utu3BH

Who else felt that quake and where are you? We definitely felt it in downtown Sacramento. Looks like a 5.8 in Nevada.

Much like the Embarcadero Fwy in SF, Sacramento allowed a highway to cut downtown off from our waterfront—arguably the city's worst urban planning decision in modern history. Decking I-5 can help undo that damage. Read our piece from last year (2nd story): bit.ly/3AgMJOM
21 Oct 2024
In the late 80s, San Francisco's Embarcadero Freeway carried 100,000 vehicles per day as a sort of traffic sewer, blocking the city from the expansive waterfront. But in 1989, the Loma Prieta earthquake rocked the freeway beyond repair, giving planners and engineers no choice but to distribute all that traffic to surface streets. The results... The local streets absorbed the traffic, transit ridership shot up, housing soared, new jobs opened, and various redevelopment projects transformed the waterfront. Think about that. After part of a downtown freeway collapsed, the area began to thrive and turned into a highly sought after destination.

Bad car accident just after 6pm at 15th & L streets downtown at the northeast corner of Capitol Park. A white pick-up truck hit this smaller Toyota. The pick-up then hit the traffic light and continued onto the sidewalk along Capitol Park and into the park itself.

This is where the car stopped. A bystander said it appeared the driver was trying to get away.

The bystander said the woman driving the car appeared ok, but perhaps had whiplash and was giving her statement to the police. Glass and debris everywhere.

Minutes after the police arrived, it appears the man from the pick-up was placed in the back of the police car in handcuffs.
