When Oregon decriminalized drug possession in 2021, fatal drug overdoses increased. This study found the potent opioid fentanyl saturated Oregon's unregulated drug market at the same time, which likely accounted for the increase, not decriminalization. ja.ma/47jN1jV

Starting now! We’re gathered near @GovKathyHochul’s office ready to march for all those lost to preventable overdose. The Governor has NO plan, outside of cutting funding and increasing penalties. That won’t save lives! #IOAD #HarmReduction

"Well-funded community-based programs, with Black & Native leadership, providing harm reduction resources, naloxone, & MOUD in the context of comprehensive, culturally appropriate healthcare & other services, represent the highest priority interventions to decrease inequalities."
Out now in AJP with Helena Hansen and @MaxJordan_N, we take a deep dive into racial inequalities through each of the four waves of the US overdose crisis, and discuss solutions. ajp.psychiatryonline.org/doi…

"CBO SSPs have strong potential to expand overdose response services nationally, particularly if provided with sustained and adequate funding. Communities should aim to provide funding that does not hinder SSP innovation so they can remain flexible in responding to local needs."

The critical message from the Summit was those responding to overdose should: 1. Aim to restore breathing w/out causing withdrawal; 2. Give low/standard doses of naloxone (0.4 mg intramuscular & <4 mg intranasal) until spontaneous breathing resumes; 3. Create a calm environment.
