Breaking News: Home Secretary condemns in Parliament the brutal racist attack and rape of Sikh woman in Oldbury
As expected the Home Secretary, Shabana Mahmood was asked in Parliament today about the brutal racist attack and rape of a young Sikh woman in Oldbury last Tuesday.
Responding to a question by Gurinder Josan, the Labour MP for Smethwick she said:
“The horror of a sexual assault motivated by race or ethnicity is absolutely appalling.”
“I’m sure the whole House will join me in condemning such crimes in the strongest possible terms.”
Later she said:
“This government will not stand for any incitement to racial hatred or violence and it is imperative and I think incumbent on all Members of the House to make sure we all jointly/collectively hold that line.”
Dabinderjit Singh OBE, the Lead Executive for Political Engagement at the Sikh Federation (UK) said:
“We welcome the condemnation of the deplorable and vicious racist sexual assault in Oldbury by the Home Secretary in Parliament today.”
“However, this should only be the start of a conversation with government on the proper recognition of Anti-Sikh hate and how government needs to work with Sikh community organisations to ensure hate crimes are reported to the police, followed up and appropriately addressed.”
