The bottom line tonight is that the military establishment didnāt win the argument with Labour cabinet and MPs that they needed to cut spending, raise borrowing, raise taxes or cut welfare to fund higher defence spending.
Keir Starmer and Rachel Reeves do not agree with John Healey even now, and while Iām sure mast Labour MPs would like to raise defence spending more, thereās no consensus what gives to achieve this.

āI saw it two weeks ago, and when I saw it, I wasn't happy with the level of, transformation within it, particularly the lessons from Ukraine, uncrewed systems automation, and pulling those lessons into every section of our armed forces. So I think there's much more work to be done in that space. but then when you match that with the funding settlement as we move to 2030, it isn't enough.ā
āThe defence investment plan as a whole, I haven't been involved in. And I find that very strange, as in the construct of what was in that plan. But I can understand some of the reasons why not. because I can disrupt things every now and again. I was, I wouldn't say alarmed, but I was very concerned that it wasn't necessarily heeding the lessons from Ukraine"

BREAKING: Defence Secretary John Healey effectively confirms the Defence Investment Plan will not come out this week. There had been talk about the plan - or elements of it - being revealed on Friday when parliament is not sitting.
The speaker said he would be āappalledā should that happen.
Asked for his response to the speakerās concerns, Mr Healey told a news conference with the foreign secretary and their Australian counterparts: āwhen we publish significant reports we respect parliamentā
The potential Friday date had replaced an initial aim to get the DIP out this Thursday. It will now be pushed into next week as the Ministry of Defence pushes for more money
