Narratives about the debt crisis in Global South countries typically present it as a technical issue or the fault of “corrupt” or “incompetent” governments. This intentionally erases colonialism in creating Global South debt, & how it is utilised as a form of neo-colonialism.

De torenhoge schulden waarmee vele Afrikaase landen zitten sinds het IMF hen SAPs oplegde en die de ongelijkheid vergrootten zijn niet vergeten en evenmin kwijtgescholden. De steun voor Rusland weerspiegelt misschien het meest van al wel een kritiek op het Westen.

Het is te makkelijk om de steun voor Rusland simpelweg te beschouwen als het resultaat van desinformatie of een diplomatiek offensief. Dat laatste zal ongetwijfeld meespelen. Maar het laat te weinig reflectie toe over de rol die het Westen jarenlang speelde op het continent.
