Today I'm launching Silverman Strategy Group. Technology, policy, and comms are colliding faster than ever. That’s what this firm is built for.

There are now three certainties in life: Death, taxes, and F-35 cost overruns. All for a readiness rate of 25%. Meanwhile the list of companies that could make something better and cheaper is longer than ever.
F-35 office needs $13.7B more than planned for sustainment over 5 years ow.ly/vZ1L106zChh

The under-analyzed risk for the SpaceX IPO: The moment DC finally tunes in and realizes the DOGE guy they hate just had the biggest IPO in history. For a space company they don't understand. With an AI lab inside it they don't trust. On the backs of billions in retail money.

Maybe they will succeed. Who knows. But I couldn’t invent a worse narrative for SV to cultivate right now than “DOGE for the private sector.”
I wrote about Silicon Valley wanting to make DOGE for the private sector (ominously targeting … elder care) and the myth of the “builder” as a disguise for something more insidious. (gift link below)

Just watched Sara Eisen ask Alex Karp how he will protect Palantir from getting politicized… That ship sailed a long time ago. There's no company despised more by the Democratic base. The real question is if their value prop survives the hated of an entire political party.

Scary situation (and lots of questions still unanswered.) But also, incredible earned media for @Saronic.
More here: The drone used was a 24-foot Navy Corsair made by Saronic Technologies, said Navy Capt. Tim Hawkins, a Central Command spokesman. The crew were picked up by the vessel, taken to a second location on the water, and then hoisted up into a helicopter. The Corsair was first fielded in Centcom in March, shortly after the war with Iran began.

AI companies looking at the power of public markets. Let's see if they're right.
Breaking: OpenAI filed confidentially for an IPO, as the ChatGPT maker looks to join AI rivals tapping public markets to fund ambitious growth plans bloomberg.com/news/articles/…

A lot of ink spilled on the Dem AI political divide, but the Tucker/Bannon view of things is still an underrated force, especially when Trump is not on the ballot.
I doubt Democrats will produce good policy re: AI, but Republicans have allowed them to capitalize on public concern about the power and influence of Big Tech by failing to adopt a sensible framework that will protect the public from the very real downsides of the technology. A policy that says transhumanists in Silicon Valley should be able to do what they want is not an acceptable approach, nor is it a politically viable approach.

Defense modernization requires both the Hill and the Pentagon to be all in. Reps. Rob Wittman and Pat Ryan join the show to talk about bipartisan legislation, appropriations, and competing with China. Listen here: pod.link/1818133762/episode/…

Having an opinion on the philosophy of Anthropic vs Open is still a .1% take. For 99.9%, the thing that matters is “does AI make my life better?” Nobody protesting a data center is debating Sam vs Dario. For how different they think they are, they have the same problem.

Most space companies have been able to focus more on building than selling a vision to the masses. SpaceX IPO changes that. It'll get politicized, quickly. Especially when it shows up in 401ks. Will be interesting to see who capitalizes on that increased spotlight.

It’s unfortunate that what is a real push for necessary action will be overshadowed on the Hill by the Obernolte/Trahan bill, an NDAA mark-up, and a Senate vote-a-rama. The combo of signers/urgency deserved a full news cycle.
Sam Altman, Dario Amodei, Demis Hassabis and many others have signed a letter urging Congress to increase security on orders of synthetic nucleic acids - and the equipment needed to make them - as models continue to become increasingly bio-capable.

Most of the buzz will be about the contentious amendment debates... so props to @PeteModi for highlighting the major policy changes in this year's NDAA (including of course Sec. 818!)

I’m not sure there’s a more important graph in the world right now.
“The public has swung 49 points against data centers in just nine months, underscoring the heightened political salience of the facilities and the AI industry that they embody.”

Big day all-around for those who care about the federal government forcibly taking equity stakes in companies!

An inconvenient truth: What makes Bernie’s argument compelling is his use of the very arguments Dario and Sam made for years. He's taking them at their word re: AI transformation and laying the groundwork for a political coalition the labs cannot ignore.
AI is built on humanity’s collective knowledge. The wealth it generates must benefit humanity — not just Elon Musk, Sam Altman and other AI oligarchs. That’s why I’ll be introducing the American AI Sovereign Wealth Fund Act — to give the public a direct ownership stake.

Obviously impossible to know, but I do think public sentiment on the labs (and AI on the whole) would be more positive if the first ~$1 trillion wasn’t solely available in private markets.
We've raised $65 billion in Series H funding at a $965 billion post-money valuation, led by @AltimeterCap, Dragoneer, @Greenoaks, and @sequoia. This investment will help us advance our research and expand our capacity to meet growing demand for Claude.
