In 1952, the area was gazetted as Kazinga National Park before being renamed Queen Elizabeth National Park in 1954 following a visit by Queen Elizabeth II. The Kazinga Channel became the parkβs central attraction and remains one of the most visited wildlife-viewing locations in Africa.
The channel has played a major role in conservation by providing water year-round for wildlife. It hosts one of the worldβs highest concentrations of hippos, large numbers of Nile crocodiles, elephants, buffaloes, and over 100 bird species. In 2005, the channel experienced a significant anthrax outbreak that killed many hippos, highlighting the importance of ecosystem management in the park.
The Kazinga boat cruise is regarded as one of Ugandaβs premier tourism experiences. The channel has become a symbol of Ugandaβs wildlife tourism industry and is often featured in international documentaries and safari promotions.
