I've spent much of my career trying to reduce the rich/poor gap in education.
Nothing's worked.
Which has led me to the conclusion that we're thinking about inequality the wrong way...

Politicians like to talk about education as a universal benefit and one that can equalise opportunity.
But one of its main (and to some degree necessary) purposes is to create hierarchies.
Being able to talk about this contradiction is key to actually reducing inequality.

I concede my bet as agreed to @Samfr - £100 (ex-Gift Aid) to the @TrussellUK Trust, over the percentage of OVERALL private school students leaving the system.
This was 5.6%, against my forecast 10%.
More nuance to come on @BBCRadio4 with @TimHarford on Wednesday.

Back in 2022/2023 lots of people like Dom Cummings were insistent that pushing back too hard on Russia would lead to nuclear conflict. So we should force Ukraine to settle.
But here we are with Crimea under threat and Putin in serious trouble...
