Thunderstorm crosses Northern New Mexico Multiple small lightning fires confirmed Santa Fe, NM, June 15, 2026 —A thunderstorm crossed Northern New Mexico today producing significant precipitation and lightning. Two small lightning fires have been confirmed. The Gallina Fire located on the Cuba Ranger District was reported at one tenth of an acre, burning in oak brush. Fire is located in Regina, New Mexico approximately 4 miles northwest of the San Pedro Parks Wilderness. Fire behavior was minimal and has been contained. The Krause Fire is also on the Cuba Ranger district and is reported at 2-3 acres, burning in Douglas-fir, oak brush and slash and is located at the end of Bluebird Mesa Road approximately 5 miles south of the San Pedro Parks Wilderness. Fire behavior is minimal, creeping through fuels producing 2–4-inch flame lengths. Firefighters are currently working to contain the fire. RV fire in Black Canyon Campground Fire fully contained Santa Fe, NM, June 9, 2026 — Firefighters on the Espanola Ranger District responded to a small fire in the Back Canyon Campground. The fire was smoldering underneath ponderosa pine and Douglas fir canopy in the adjacent grass. A recreational vehicle was burned in the fire. Fire was contained at the end of the day on June 8 and was one tenth of an acre. The fire is currently under investigation.

TOM SPRINGS WILDFIRE FINAL UPDATE The Tom Springs Wildfire was called contained on  Sunday, May 31. Fire crews reported lines holding with little to no smoke. The final acreage is 3.82 acres. Today, firefighters will monitor, patrol, and address isolated heat, especially around heavier fuels. The lightning-caused wildfire, first reported on May 29, is located approximately 10 miles northwest of the Village of Pecos in the Pecos Canyon area. The Santa Fe National Forest remains in Stage 1 Fire Restrictions due to elevated fire danger. During firefighting operations crews encountered illegal campfires, and all were extinguished. The public is encouraged to mitigate any wildfire risk by following these campfire safety tips. This will be the final update for the Tom Springs Wildfire. Tom Springs Wildfire Daily Update Firefighters on the Santa Fe National Forest continue to actively suppress the Tom Springs Wildfire, located approximately 10 miles northwest of the Village of Pecos in the Pecos Canyon area. No significant spread occurred overnight. The lightning-caused wildfire, first reported on May 29, is now at 3.82 acres following updated infrared and on-the-ground size assessments gathered yesterday afternoon. Fire crews made strong progress on Saturday, completing handline around the fire perimeter, with hose lay installed around approximately half of the line. Crews continue to secure the line today, focusing on remaining areas of heat. All primary firefighting resources began moving back into the fire area early this morning, including engine crews, patrol units, and the Santa Fe Hotshots. A Type 1 helicopter has been ordered to support today’s operations. Aviation resources have been critical to suppression efforts. Yesterday, a Type 1 helicopter conducted multiple water drops. A Type 3 helicopter completed reconnaissance and supported bucket operations. Monastery Lake, located west of NM State Road 63, remains the primary dip site through the weekend. Please avoid Monastery Lake when aircraft are dipping water. There are no structures immediately threatened, though a residence nearby has been contacted. Ground access to the fire area is difficult, requiring travel on Forest Road 86A and narrow two-track roads. The Santa Fe National Forest remains in Stage 1 Fire Restrictions due to elevated fire danger. FIREFIGHTERS ACTIVELY SUPPRESSING THE TOM SPRINGS WILDFIRE Forest Service fire managers on the Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF) were notified of a new wildfire start, named the Tom Springs Wildfire, on the afternoon of Friday May 29, 2026. The wildfire is in Pecos Canyon in the Pecos-Las Vegas Ranger District located 10 miles northwest of the Village of Pecos, N.M., in San Miguel County. The wildfire was caused by lightning and is currently approximately 3.4 acres. Fire resources on scene are directly attacking the fire using a full suppression strategy. A helicopter is gathering water out of Monastery Lake, located west of NM State Road 63, and dropping water on the wildfire to slow spread. The public is asked to exercise extreme caution in the area and not to interfere with firefighting operations. At this time there is no threat to people, or property and smoke may be visible from the Village of Pecos and from NM State Road 63.
