I finished walking Offa's Dyke a couple of weekends ago. Grey skies over the Severn here. It's been such a joy to walk these 177 miles (I'm totally sure I did more than that!!) with some of the best women in my life. And the first draft of my novel continues apace...
Bloody delighted to have won a Northern Writers Award for Fiction from @NewWritingNorth for my novel-in-progress, about four women walking Offa's Dyke, taking in their friendship, their lives, their mothering, their ageing. This award is such a wonderful boost.
It's my final week as a @royallitfund fellow this week. Three years working with brilliant history students (and staff) at the University of Manchester. I'm going to miss it!
ALT For My Students,
After the Election
There are still your stories, still stars
in the pine trees. There are still children
making their way back from school, trying
not to step on cracks in the sidewalk,
believing it matters. There are still mothers
kneeling in the ruins, promising
the gunshots aren't coming.
There are still fathers
alone in the night, the wounds in them
like mule-deer in the orchards, trying not
to clack their antlers. There is still
the heart, the moon.
Come, loves, let's stand here
after madness. The world
is not over, only broken.
There are old books, there are horses
in the lemon trees. There are children, still,
waiting in the classrooms, looking up
with tired eyes full of wonder.
Look at them. There is work we have to do.
—Joseph Fasano
"This is PRECISELY the time when artists go to work. There is no time for despair, no place for self-pity, no need for silence, no room for fear. We speak, we write... That is how civilizations heal."

What an absolute joy it was to co-host @BartlettArchUCL's first ever writing festival this week, with the fabulous Jane Rendell and Polly Gould. All those words are still resonating...
I just took part in The Big Plastic Count, as we’re still producing far too much plastic. @_RobbieMoore, will you lead the way at the negotiations for a Global Plastics Treaty and push for a cut in production of at least 75% by 2040?

We have some news.
As a volunteer-led organisation we’ve found operating our community market difficult for a while now.
So it's with a heavy heart, we announce we'll be taking a break from trading from mid July this year...
