I butchered bistro to create a better demo level for my godot blender pre-rendered background game dev tools. Good showcase for all the features like capsule shadows, camera rotation, and depth sorting. Next up is adding irradiance volumes to better light dynamic objects.

Im not surprised they built this. A disturbing number of automakers use or tried using unreal to build their infotainment software. Epic sells it as a UI 3d all-in-one package and leadership buys the pitch because its seen as cool and futuristic.

We love to hate on them but spotify has shipped some great features over the last decade. Wrapped was cool before every app started doing it, discover weekly was a curated feed before tiktok, ai dj flopped but at least they tried.

Despite being over 20 years old, REmake is still the visual fidelity benchmark for pre-rendered background games imo. Its what im trying to surpass with my godot and blender tools. Should be possible by applying modern lightmap and irradiance baking techniques to pre-rendered backgrounds.

Pre-rendered background graphics work part 2: I added capsule shadows and GTAO. The background beauty pass is now split into two passes for direct and indirect light.

Dominant light direction is stored as a octohedral encoded texture. I use the blue channel to store a cone half-angle that roughly approximates light "focus"

I think its time to upgrade my test level to something more impressive. Eventually I want to implement some sort of irradiance volume to better approximate lighting on realtime objects.
