Portland Public Schools considered budget cuts to PE in 2010 & 2020. Save Portland PE was created to raise awareness & successfully advocate to #SavePortlandPE.
Portland Public Schools will make its final vote on the 2020/21 budget tomorrow, June 23. Please contact @Super_GGuerrero & @PPSConnect school board members requesting they adopt a new budget with the restoration of the PE/Adaptive PE teachers & funds! #SavePortlandPE
๐ News Flash: PPS will restore all adaptive PE teachers for the 20-21 school year. Great news! Thanks to parents, teachers, staff who lent their voices @Super_GGuerrero & staff for re-examining the budget to pull back cuts. @PPSConnect@OregonSHAPE@adamphowell@SavePortlandPE
Great news! We just received this letter from @PPSConnect confirming that they are restoring all adaptive PE teachers in the 2020-21 budget. This is a wonderful development and we applaud @Super_GGuerrero & the Board for making equality a priority. Thanks to all for speaking up!
Just wondering if these cuts to PPS staff will also require students with disabilities to be pushed into general eduction Math, Science, English, and Social Studies classes?
PE is an academic subject that requires trained Adapted PE teachers to deliver specially designed content.
Entire Adapted PE program being cut, taking away services to over 550 students! This decision has intersectional impact as it will also disproportionately affect our BIPOC students with disabilities that make up a significant base of our students serviced.
2/2: @EilidhPdx, Inclusive options usually do not have qualified and specialized educators trained to support the student in the ways they need to be supported. We need #PEForAllKids.
1/2: @EilidhPdx, Adapted PE & Inclusive PE are not the same. @PPSConnectโs own website defines it as โspecially designed instruction for students who require adaptions and modifications to participate safely and successfully in general PR programming.โ
Adaptive PE teachers were recently informed that Adaptive PE as a service would be severely cut & possibly eliminated altogether by @PPSConnect. Tell @Super_GGuerrero this is not equitable for students w/disabilities. Sign the petition at bit.ly/PEForAllKids#SavePortlandPE
Thank you @Super_GGuerrero for reconsidering the decision. However, you do not definitively state the cuts won't happen, nor do you address adaptive PE. Weโll keep fighting to #SavePortlandPE until the budget is passed because #AllKidsNeedPE
We've reduced a potentially devastating $57M in budget cuts to $12M w/ proactive cost-saving measures & labor collaboration. We continue to examine all avail resources & propose additional adjustments to maintain valued programming, including all elementary gen ed P.E. teachers.
I wonโt vote ๐ for these PE cuts. Itโs contrary to CDC/health experts recommendations; backslides on compliance w/state law. Most IMPORTANTLY, kids NEED the opportunity to be active so they can learn better! Working w/@Super_GGuerrero/staff to preserve critical PE positions ๐ช๐ผ
