How Ball Flight is evaluated in the Diamond Stats App. The Ball Flight grade is based on a hitter’s line drive percentage. This was the toughest of the Core Four skills to grade because every hitter has a slightly different ideal ball flight profile. But one thing is always true, line drives are almost always a good outcome, regardless of the hitter. The app also breaks down batted balls by direction (pull, middle, oppo) and shows the wOBA for each ball flight type. This allows you to see not only where a hitter is putting the ball in play most often, but also how effective they are when they hit it there. This information can be extremely valuable when identifying a hitter’s optimal ball flight profile. How swing decisions are evaluated in the Diamond Stats App. I chose to use a simple model, that while it isn't perfect, gives a pretty good idea of whether your players are making good swing decisions. The swing decisions grade takes the players Heart Swing % and divides it by their Chase Swing %. Basically it rewards swinging at pitches you can do damage on, and taking pitches that are tough to hit. The app also includes Pitches/PA, Swing %, and 1st Pitch Swing%. These aren't factored into the grade, but can be used by coaches to evaluate a players patience at the plate, and ability to work counts. FYI, the app is FREE to use!
