๐ŸŒฑ #WorldEnvironmentDay: By connecting what children eat in school to how food is grown, prepared and sourced, #SchoolMeals can help drive food systems change. Here's how ๐Ÿ‘‡ โšก Short term: Governments can improve menus, adopt clean cooking, cut food waste and integrate food & nutrition education. ๐ŸŒ Long term: They create steady demand for local procurement, promote agroecological farming and help transition towards healthier, more sustainable food systems. ๐Ÿ“‘ Learn more: bit.ly/SOSFReport

๐Ÿ‡ฐ๐Ÿ‡ช #Kenya's: Amb. Frederick Matwang'a (@AmbMatwanga) on why #SchoolMeals are central to Kenya's food systems transformation: ๐ŸŽ™๏ธ "Nutrition outcomes are shaped far beyond the health sector. They are shaped by what farmers produce, what markets make available, what families can afford and what children eat every day at home and in school. We deliberately link nutrition to food systems transformation with the goal of ensuring that healthy diets are accessible, affordable and sustainable for all. Today, in Kenya, school meals reach more than 3 million children every day. Our ambition is to scale these further through a homegrown school feeding model that aims to reach up to 10 million children every day by the year 2030. This is government-led & strengthened through partnerships with @WFP & the @SchoolMeals_ Coalition, This is not simply about feeding children. It is about building stronger local food systems & creating opportunities for farmers, for women and young people." ๐Ÿ“ #RomeNutritionWeek2026 High-Level Plenary: schoolmealscoalition.org/memโ€ฆ #๏ธโƒฃ #RNW26 #FutureNutrition @UN_Nutrition @EduMinKenya @WFP_Kenya

๐ŸŒฑ Chiara Ferraboschi, @BiovIntCIAT_eng, on why neglected and underutilized crops are a powerful entry point for healthier diets, stronger food systems and biodiversity conservation through #SchoolMeals: ๐ŸŽ™๏ธ"Neglected and underutilized crops are wild, semi-domesticated or traditional foods that have been largely overlooked by agricultural research, policy and markets. They are more climate-resilient because they are already embedded in local ecosystems and whenever we consume them, we enhance dietary diversity, which leads to healthier diets. In the #Philippines, 22 species of neglected and underutilized crops were prioritized within school meals, including pigeon peas and amaranth, alongside the establishment of more than 30 conservation sites and seed exchanges. In #Brazil, neglected and underutilized crops were mapped across the country, their nutritional composition was analyzed, and this generated a robust body of evidence used by policy-makers to develop the first national policy recognizing those crops, leading to their inclusion in dietary guidelines and school meal procurement programmes. They represent a multiple win-win opportunity in school meal programmes because they enhance diets, results and environments! It is really timely and important to act now, as unfortunately more than 75% of crop diversity has already been lost." ๐Ÿ“ #RNW26 #๏ธโƒฃ#FutureNutrition #RomeNutritionWeek2026 @UN_Nutrition

๐ŸŒ Alexandros Tataridas, member of the Youth Policy Board of the @World_FoodForum @FAO, on why youth must be at the centre of #SchoolMeals policy and design: ๐ŸŽ™๏ธ"Youth should be the face of school meal policies and programmes โ€” involved as co-designers, communicators, young researchers, entrepreneurs and future decision-makers. If we want to have inclusive school meal programmes, we need to ask ourselves: who produces the food, who benefits from it, who earns from it, who decides what is procured, and finally, what knowledge should be documented, recognized and valorized? School meals can nourish children today, but they can also benefit biodiversity, livelihoods and local economies, shaping the sustainable agri-food systems that we are all working on. Emphasizing the use of food biodiversity in school meals and involving youth in their design are entry points for sustained behavioral change and the adoption of healthy food habits among the new generations." ๐Ÿ“#RNW26 #๏ธโƒฃ #FutureNutrition #RomeNutritionWeek2026 @UN_Nutrition
