Congrats @westernprof. Well deserved for great work you do in bringing city and rural issues and research to the forefront.
So honoured to receive the 2022 Award for Scholarly Distinction in Geography today from @CanGeographers. Humbled to be recognized alongside some of the all-time greats in #geography! Thanks to my great @thehealab team & academic community collaborators @WesternU @westernuGeoEnv

The true cost of growth.
From my column: This single block of old 2 and 3 storey, mixed-use buildings (Corydon Ave) has the same assessed tax value ($20mil) as this Costco, but it uses 5 times less land (115k sf v. 540k sf) and infrastructure. Which one is better for taxpayers? winnipegfreepress.com/opinio…

If you have to travel:
Car kit. It's a great idea, particularly with this variable winter weather, the unexpected can happen. You may be in your car during an emergency; be sure to have supplies to keep you comfortable. For more info: nsem.ca/get-prepared/your-ca… #NorthVan #WestVan

Couldn't agree more @jmfplan. This is a really opportunity to plan for a community of the future, an opportunity to decide to build a community based on people. The dollars can be spent on other great initiatives that are designed for people and help our climate. Get involved!
Cities across Canada have declared a #ClimateEmergency but do they really mean it? What happens when its time to make tough decisions? This $***M? road widening is a big test for #ldnont & cancelling it could show its not biz as usual. Decision day Aug 31 bit.ly/3mFVWqx

We don’t make “outside” for kids the way we used to.
🤔:"I wonder why children these days don't play outside anymore like they did in the past..." Outside (in the past) Outside (these days)

Wouldn’t have happened without your leadership Jesse! Lots of Staff had an important role-@brittohagan Mike Tomazincic, @mlknieriem Andrew Macpherson, Jeff Bruin, Julie Michaud & Art Zuidema come to mind. Really happy things worked out so well!! Old East community led the way!!
Making the best of a bad decision to close the school. Thanks to residents and city staff, especially @jmfplan, who had the foresight to recommend buying the property and turning it into a new park #oevldn #ldnont

How many hours after snowfall would a plow clear this road to make car travel safe? That question came to mind as I rode my bike on this scary sand-packed bikelane in April. Rethinking operational priorities/budgets is key to make cycling an attractive mobility option in any city

We still too often describe streets as “closed” when cars are removed, instead of calling them OPEN to people. Does taking away cars make this street seem open or closed to you? 5th in NYC, video via my friend @ebkent #OpenStreets #LanguageMatters #NYC

🏞️ Reimagining cities in light of the pandemic, and through the lens of health, we should ask ourselves: What if there were a park over the highway bridging our community back together? #NorthVan Check out my op-ed where I invite you to imagine what is possible ⬇️

A National Active Transport Strategy Framework & $400 million investment specifically for active transport infrastructure over 5 years! A BIG day for Canadian city-building, brought to us by many passionate people including @CanUrbanism’s former Vice President @AndyFillmoreHFX!
Today's dedicated $400m fund for active transportation, along with the framework to develop a national strategy, is something city planners like me, municipalities, and advocates alike have been dreaming about for years. Helmets off to every who worked to make today a reality.

What inner city highway would you MOST like to tear down? (Not only did Seoul create the best people-place in the city; reconnect neighbourhoods; create massive new jobs, private sector reinvestment & public sector financial spin-offs, & more — but the TRAFFIC ALSO GOT BETTER.)
#Seoul view: Former highway with 160K cars/day, now a park with 75K visitors & 113K new jobs along it:

Great opportunity to show case how you are making your city or region a better place. See @BrentToderian competition and share your positive city-building energy.
LOVE GREAT BOOKS? I really like @romanmars’ new book “The 99% Invisible City” & have an extra copy. So I’m going to try a “competition” to gift it to a young (under 30) urbanist or city-lover who is working to make their city better. READ below, & RT this to help spread the word!

The new @NCC_CCN Capital Pathway Plan (Oct 2020) is both inspiring and pragmatic. The ideal network includes 330 kilometres of well connected pathways and feeder links with about 118 kilometres of new pathway segments. I’m excited to ride/roll! ncc-website-2.s3.amazonaws.c…
