To understand the tectonic changes sweeping the Gulf as a result of the Iran war, look to Oman. The one Gulf state Trump threatened to “blow up” and which its neighbors ostracized is now the biggest winner as the dust settles. 🧵

3) The money matters too. Omani officials tell me that they think their country’s tourism sector will rebound quicker than other states. Oman will benefit from the reordering of trade flows also with its ports and Arabian Sea access in demand.

The American Farm School was opened by U.S. missionaries outside Thessaloniki in 1903—such a storied institution that speaks to the history of Greece as part of the wider Levant. A pleasure to present The New Byzantines there!

Worth reading. A calmly devastating account of what happened in Gaza.
Jean-Pierre Filiu’s A Historian in Gaza has been long listed for the 2026 @cgmoorefoundat1 Moore Prize for Human Rights Writing 👏🎉

Roughly the same with Palestinians. The idea that people speaking Arabic (or Arabic related dialects) come from Arabia is as bogus as saying that the French, Portuguese, and Spaniards come from the Latium province of Italy.
Good community note. (Hilariously, OP is an Israeli too.) Today's Egyptians overwhelmingly descend from Ancient Egyptians. Both Copts and Muslims have a little bit of East African Ancestry, and Muslims have a little bit of Arabian ancestry that Copts lack. Apart from religious extremists - Salafis, etc - Egyptians including Muslims take pride in their pre-Islamic heritage, just like Iranians do.

The Israelis are eliminating one of the last Christian Palestinians strongholds in the West Bank and the place I chose to stay when I was researching the Palestinian Christians in From the Holy Mountain. It is a place with an incredibly ancient history, a cradle of Christianity, and its people have some of the closest DNA matches to the people of the time of Christ. Why is no one reporting this?

Scoop: The US's top diplomat, Marco Rubio, plans to visit Bahrain for his first wartime visit to the Gulf. Sources tell me the choice of a state on the frontlines of Iran's attacks is a sign of US support for the Al-Khalifa family. middleeasteye.net/news/us-ma…

The great @DanielSeidemann -who is interviewed in my book The New Byzantines about Israel's occupation of East Jerusalem confirms @MiddleEastEye 's scoop.
Breaking, dangerous and of utmost importance. We have heard from a reliable source that there is indeed a US proposal to replace/annul Jordanian custodianship over Al Aqsa/Temple Mount, corroborating a May 25 report in Mideast Eye: middleeasteye.net/news/pales…  We have been told that a document has been circulated proposing to replace Jordanian custodianship with that of a consortium of international/interfaith parties, including Muslim/Arab and Jewish representatives, and coming from Jared Kushner/Arieh Lightstone or those closely in their orbit.  We have also been informed that the proposal was circulated among regional stakeholders and has encountered fierce opposition.

3) Experts say Gulf states and the U.S. could look to reassess basing, a lá Oman —the U.S. has access to Omani facilities but not a permanent presence. Oman has been one of the least hit countries by Iran amid the war.
