🏫The move from primary to post-primary is one of the biggest milestones in a child’s life. 📔This week, Children’s School Lives Report 9 was published, which shares children’s, parents’ & teachers’ perspectives on this transition - from excitement and belonging, to worries about tests, friendships and costs. 📖 See the full report cslstudy.pulse.ly/v4ozkdyrtz #CSLstudy #Education #Transitions #Primary #PostPrimary

🏫📉 More than 30% of students in Deis second-level schools are considered ‘chronic absentees.' UCD School of Education Professor Judith Harford and Dr Brian Fleming have highlighted the key points of a recent national report on the problem ⬇️ 📊 Significant rise: In 2018/19, 14.5% of post-primary students were “chronic absentees” (missing 20 days). By 2022/23, this increased to 23.2%. 🏫 Deis schools hit hardest: School absenteeism is far more pervasive in schools serving deprived areas, reaching 30.7% in Deis post-primary, compared to 19.5% in non-Deis schools. 🧑‍🎓 Wider impact: Irregular attendance at school can have a lifelong impact on an individual's educational outcomes and career prospects. High absence rates also disrupt teaching and result in staff spending large amounts of time managing attendance issues. 🏥 Beyond the "Covid Effect": More recent research has increasingly highlighted additional factors such as student wellbeing, lifestyle, sleep patterns, and the influence of social media. Illness remains the leading cause of school absences and is often viewed as an unavoidable aspect of school life. 👨‍👩‍👧 Family & peers: Early research largely attributed absenteeism to family-related factors; however, peers and school culture were also contributing factors. 🗣️ "Consider the notional case of a student attending a Deis post-primary school where, on average, in excess of a quarter of their classmates is absent on any given day. Inevitably, the rhythm of the teaching process is disrupted, to the disadvantage of the entire class. Thus, high levels of absenteeism are not only a symptom of educational disadvantage but also a contributor to it." @JudithHarford irishtimes.com/ireland/educa…

New paper out now reporting the first quasi-experimental evaluation of #DEIS over its first decade: we compare outcomes in schools either side of the threshold for inclusion in DEIS (and find little effect). The paper is available for free until June 29th: authors.elsevier.com/c/1l3-O…
