Today marks the 82nd anniversary of the beginning of the Battle of Saipan.
On this day in 1944, elements of the 2d Marine Division and 4th Marine Division, alongside
@USArmy Soldiers of the U.S. Army's 27th Infantry Division, landed on the beaches of Saipan's southwest coast, initiating what would become a brutal, nearly four-week engagement.
American forces fought determined Japanese defenders, an elaborate network of caves, and challenging mountainous terrain.
Despite these obstacles, they pressed forward with remarkable resolve. After successfully establishing a beachhead, the campaign shifted to a grueling assault through "Death Valley" and a push to secure the heavily defended commanding heights of Mount Tapotchau, which was finally captured in late June.
A key strategic victory was achieved on June 18, 1944, when American forces seized Aslito Airfield, securing a critical objective that would place the Japanese mainland in range of U.S. long-range B-29 bombers.
For their extraordinary bravery during the battle, 4 Marines and 3 Soldiers were awarded the Medal of Honor.
While the Battle of Saipan commenced 82 years ago, the valor displayed by the Marines, Sailors, and Soldiers there remains a cornerstone of our military's history.
Their actions helped solidify the Corps’ reputation as a formidable fighting force, a legacy that continues to this day.
