“What would happen to Texas if oil drilling was banned? Fishing is vital to the future of Alaska.” That response captures what many Alaskans are trying to say. Commercial fishing is foundational to this state’s economy and identity. You cannot remove a major economic engine and expect everything around it to keep working the same way. Jobs, ports, fuel, shipping, processors, small businesses, and coastal communities are all tied to the fishing economy. What happens if commercial fishing goes away? Survey respondents came back to the same concerns again and again: Jobs. Groceries. Fuel. Shipping. Airfare. Not to mention the future of coastal communities. In many parts of Alaska, commercial fishing helps support the infrastructure that keeps communities supplied and connected. When that system is weakened, the impact can reach far beyond the dock. Before shutting down an industry, Alaska leaders need to answer a basic question… what replaces it? They call it activism. We call it a well-funded Outside operation 🤷

An outright trawl ban sounds simple. The consequences aren't. Here's what it actually means for Alaska's workers and economy: juneauempire.com/2026/05/17/…

One survey respondent from Unalaska put it plainly: “Shutting down the trawl fishery ... would have a direct effect on the cost of groceries, the cost of fuel, the cost of shipping, the cost of airfare...” That is the concern we are hearing from Alaskans who know how deeply commercial fishing is connected to everyday life. Ports, processors, air service, freight, fuel, and local businesses all rely on a working fishing economy. If that economy is disrupted, the costs get passed on to our communities. Well-funded Outside groups don't show up to public meetings. They fund "grassroots" campaigns to do it for them. Don't take the bait.

For many Alaskans, commercial fishing is personal. In our survey, 82% of respondents said commercial fishing affects their life through work, their community, or Alaska’s cost of living. That means this debate is about more than a fishing method. It is about paychecks, family stability, coastal towns, and whether rural and maritime communities can continue to function. Alaska’s fishing economy has taken generations to build. Leaders should not make decisions that put it at risk without a serious plan for what would replace it.

We asked Alaskans what concerned them most about proposals to ban trawling, and 71% of named job losses, economic impact, or “all of the above.” That matters. A trawl ban would not be an isolated fisheries decision. Respondents are worried it could ripple across Alaska’s economy, affecting workers, processors, ports, shipping, fuel, groceries, and the small businesses that depend on a working waterfront. Alaska leaders should be asking what comes next before taking action that could put thousands of livelihoods at risk.

Alaska sets the global standard for sustainable fisheries. Abandoning science now would throw all of that away. Here's what's at stake: juneauempire.com/2026/05/17/…

Alaskans are worried about what happens if commercial fishing is shut down. In our recent survey, respondents pointed to job losses, higher costs, and harm to coastal communities as their top concerns. Before leaders make decisions that could reshape Alaska’s economy, they need to hear from the people who live with the consequences. Alaska's fishermen don't need talking points. A trawl ban would cost this state thousands of jobs and millions in economic activity. Ask the people who actually show up.

A lot of work has gone into making fisheries smarter and more sustainable. That progress shouldn’t get lost in the noise.
