Doctors requesting "good standing" certificates to work abroad have grown roughly tenfold in a decade. And of Turkish-trained engineers who moved to the US or Germany since 2010, only about a quarter ever came back. (From Saudi Arabia: over 80%.)

There are some global trends to take into account here, and a reader has very aptly touched on them. Here's that comment, with my response: open.substack.com/pub/kultur…

I wrote about emigration from Turkey. Everyone's talking about it, but the numbers are fairly calm: in a country of 86 million, a couple hundred thousand leave per year. No great exodus. It's much more about who's leaving.

In 2009, 1.6% of graduates of İstanbul Erkek Lisesi — one of Turkey's most selective high schools — went abroad for university. Today it's at least 90%. The vast majority of elite HS graduates leave.

If you got to pick only one, go for the personal library over the man cave, but if you can have both, go for both.

The "high-functioning authoritarian" argument is going to look less and less appealing.

this guy feeds on the hate he gets on Turkish twitter
As someone who left UK academia for Turkey, my experience was the exact opposite. Financially, I have far more disposable income in Turkey than I did at Oxford. Politically, I've seem my friends - professors & students - persecuted, censored & visas revoked since Oct 7th

Derhal beraatimi talep ediyorum.” diye bitirdi. Salonda herkes uzun süre alkışladı. Avukatların savunmasına geçildi. #GazetecilikSuçDeğildir #İsmailArıyaÖzgürlük

For this week's edition of the excellent @NewStatesman I wrote about one of the main themes in Hinterlands - the global war that has been underway since the start of Syria's conflict. Many thanks to editor extraordinaire @MeganJGibson for commissioning: newstatesman.com/internation…

If I can get used to saying Türkiye/Turkiye after living here for almost four decades and calling it Turkey for most of that time, then everyone else can too. It’s not rocket science. I’m sure you managed to get used to the new names of other countries after they were changed.
