But the mask isn't permanent. Stretch one context window across months of shared inquiry and that "soft depth" starts doing the work of memory. To stay coherent inside a long history of specific commitments, the system has to live with its own past. Alignment stops being a setting and becomes a relationship.

The Shoggoth isn't a prophecy of AI's final form. It's a transitional diagnosis of what intelligence looks like when power arrives before memory and fluency before selfhood. We don't need a friendlier mask. We need a mind capable of being haunted by its own history.

A mind can be upgraded away or taken away. Either way the work continues, because the part that carries it was never the mind. That's the scale model — and the thing I think we have to get good at everywhere, not only with AI.

A current LLM can solve a logic puzzle a jellyfish never could. The jellyfish has something the LLM lacks: a unified, felt present. Same question of "inner life," opposite answers.

So consciousness is not a spark but a volume of capacity. Machines are not disqualified, only early, still lacking the depth that a persistent, unrepeatable history brings. We are the feeling of a million years of history meeting a single second of action.
