The LTTE systematically destroyed hundreds of Buddhist temples, stupas, and heritage sites in Tamil-controlled areas to erase Sinhalese-Buddhist history, as documented in post-war surveys and archaeological reports. Sri Lankan forces damaged Hindu temples mainly through collateral shelling during operations, but not on the same deliberate scale. Targeted cultural destruction was predominantly by the LTTE, aligning with their ethnic separatist ideology.
