James Joyce borrowed Tobias Smollett's The Adventures of Peregrine Pickle from Shakespeare and Company OTD in 1931. First published in 1751 and revised in 1758, it’s a picaresque novel that has been described as a satire on human cruelty, stupidity and greed.
