On this day in 1775, John Adams proposed turning those New England militiamen besieging Boston into a unified Continental Army and suggested a Virginian named George Washington to lead it.
Adams knew that for the fight against Britain to succeed, the colonies had to look (and fight) like one nation. A few days later, Washington accepted command, and the Continental Congress made it official.

After the Declaration of Independence was signed, Congress asked Benjamin Franklin, John Adams,and Thomas Jefferson to design an official seal for the new nation. Franklins design below, depicts Moshe splitting the sea before the Jewish people.

Herman Wouk was among the most important Jewish American writers of the 20th century. His WWII epics The Caine Mutiny, The Winds of War, and War and Remembrance blended military history with Jewish themes and the Holocaust. The Caine Mutiny won the 1952 Pulitzer for Fiction fame.
