Today is day 1 of the Africa Financial Summit in Morocco by the International Finance Corporation #AFIS2024! This is a pivotal summit that gathers leaders from across #Africa to drive the continent's financial growth and transformation. I attended a couple of sessions and here are some takeaways for me today: 1.) 70% of sub-Saharan Africa are under the age of 30. This is an opportunity for the continent's growth. We need to build infrastructure to support the young and growing population. Power, education and access to the internet will play a key role here. 2.) Did you know that the default rate of developed economy is higher than the default rate of developing economies, however, developing economies access global bonds at a higher price. Meaning bond issuers on the continent issue bonds at a higher rate compared to their counterparts in developed economies. 3.) Currency stability is an issue. The Naira to the Dollar pre Covid was about N400/$ and now N1,600/$. While the Cedi to the Dollar was 5.32 to one US dollar and now it is GHC15/$. The currency has been volatile and a stable currency is important for economic growth. 4.) Climate insurance Africa is losing 2-5% of its GDP due to climate change. The insurance sector in Africa is faced with urgent issues. Traditional finance products are becoming obsolete because of the accelerated issues. We need innovative products, partnerships and policies to protect ourselves from climate risks. It has been quite an interesting day 1 Pls share with me what topics you’d like to learn more about.
