PayPal is great news. But if every international payment ends up flowing through a single telecom-controlled wallet, we’re just replacing one problem with another.
In big countries, dominant players eventually face competition. In a small market like Maldives, dominance can become permanent. Digital payment infrastructure should be open, not concentrated in the hands of a single gatekeeper.

No new law was passed.
No new regulation was introduced.
No new policy was implemented.
No new Cabinet decision was made.
It’s a foreign company called Ooredoo that brought PayPal to Maldives. The arrangement is allowing them to profit from its monopoly over PayPal service.
