📰 Breaking: Northern Ireland’s Department of Justice has withdrawn its controversial consultation on proposed firearms licensing fee increases, just hours after BASC threatened legal action over the plans.
The proposals would have seen some fees rise by more than 150%, prompting widespread backlash from shooting organisations, farmers and certificate holders.
Justice Minister Naomi Long said: “Having reflected on the issues raised during the consultation process, I have decided to withdraw the current consultation on firearms licensing fees.”
BASC’s NI director Tommy Mayne welcomed the move:
“It is the right decision for the consultation to be withdrawn. BASC opposes any increase in fees without a full, independent, and transparent review of the necessary processes involved in firearms licensing.”
