As someone who travels between Hulhumalé and Malé many times daily, I constantly see heavily loaded trucks, mostly from government companies, driving over 70 km/h on the highway. Many of them even overtake at the same high speed without caring about others on the road. Just imagine what will happen if one of these trucks runs over a person. In seconds, a family can lose a son, daughter, husband, wife, mother, or father because of reckless driving. And it happened again last night !
The most worrying part is that nobody seems to seriously check this. There is a speed limit for a reason, yet many drivers act like rules do not exist and traffic violations have no real consequences. This is becoming normal. Another dangerous issue is the white paint markings on the road. Even on hot dry days, motorcycles can feel like they are losing control when riding over them because they are very slippery. Many riders know exactly what I mean.
Who checks these roads? Who approves these materials? Who is responsible for highway safety? Do authorities only react after lives are lost? People use this road every day to go to work, return home to family, and live normal lives. They should not have to risk their lives because of speeding trucks, weak enforcement, and unsafe road conditions.
