🔬 Insights from EASO 2025 - European Congress on Obesity
by Laura Perez, Clinical Nutrition Lead at Simple Online Pharmacy
I am thrilled to share my insights from this year’s European Congress on Obesity (EASO 2025) held in beautiful Malaga. The event was rich in knowledge and collaboration, with a focus on innovative approaches to obesity management. Here are some key takeaways that resonated with me:
🤝 Collaborative Care is Key: Emphasising motivational interviewing and person-centred care, collaboration with patients significantly improves their engagement and outcomes.
🛑 Rethinking Directive Care: Patients thrive when viewed as partners - not recipients of instructions. Shifting to shared decision-making reduces resistance and fosters behavioural change.
💬 Communicate to Connect: Open-ended questions, affirmations, and reflective listening remain powerful tools in building trust and empathy.
🧠 Psychological Support is Essential: Testimonies highlighted the emotional and psychological weight of living with obesity. Holistic care must include mental health support.
🌍 Challenging Stigma: Obesity stigma remains a major barrier. We must use compassionate, accurate language - referring to "obesity management medication" rather than "weight loss pills."
📊 Holistic, Individualised Care: A multidisciplinary approach is critical. No two journeys are the same, and support must reflect this.
📈 Focus on Habits, Not Just Weight: Sustainable health habits - not just kilos lost - should define success.
🔄 Pharmacotherapy Progress: The SURMOUNT-5 study showcased the efficacy of treatments like tirzepatide in improving both weight and cardiometabolic outcomes.
🌱 Aligning with Patient Goals: Meaningful care begins with listening. Patients' personal goals must guide the approach.
These insights align and reaffirm our approach to compassionate, evidence-based care. European Association for the Study of Obesity (EASO)
