British caricatures in the late 18th and early 19th centuries were full of fanatical tropes to degrade political radicals. One such victim was Thomas Paine, whose radical egalitarian and democratic writings were linked to Satan himself! Read Chapter 2 of my senior thesis below!

Maybe it’s that Paine was a rentier of Philadelphia with limited money and these guys held positions of authority, large amounts of wealth and land, and therefore had a vested interest in a system that would maintain the ruling class’ authority?

Maybe if we had a plural executive and a unicameral legislature, like Paine proposed, alongside a constantly reforming constitution, we wouldn’t be so stunted and despotic right now?🧐

Revive Thomas Paine and he’d be a socialist, I believe that

You cannot be pro-Israel while pro-peace and pro-'democracy'. Israel is a genocidal state that has subjugated Palestinians under both 'liberal' and right-wing PMs. You guys either have no fucking principles or are ignorant of the explicitly ethnosupremacist foundations of Israel.

In the US, we have ‘no money’ to fund homes, food, and healthcare for our citizens while we simultaneously destroy houses, impose blockades, murder civilians, and bomb hospitals around the world. There is no quality of life improved for many, but lots of money gained for a few.

People kill themselves in the United States because they have no money to pay for healthcare, people die on the streets for lack of shelter, veterans kill themselves upon returning home for lack of care. This country leeches its own blood just to spill more elsewhere.

Thomas Paine side-plot:
yes, it was not just some guy though, it was William Cobbett, a former hater of Paine turned “radical”. I think he just wanted an excuse to defile Paine’s grave so he gave the pretense of memorializing him and then just let his bones rot in his attic.

Read this thread if you mourn Thomas Paine’s expulsion from the United States’ Founding.
The Federalists were diabolically pretentious, and it should come as no surprise that their system of power has led to an unrepresentative government unresponsive to the people. I want to discuss the Federalists' anti-democratic rhetoric.

I’m seeing many liberals say that if only people voted harder we could have avoided our current government. I understand, I do the civics, I vote. What these nostalgia seekers need to understand is that the root is so much deeper than Clinton or Harris or any DNC candidate.

As I enter my last semester at Georgetown University, I've reflected on its institutional inertia toward greed and power. While the same can be said for many elite universities, I speak from one in the belly of the beast. "The Hilltop is Shining" is up now on my Substack.

the way the popular sentiment for democracy that was spread by thomas paine was co-opted by the american slave-owning plutocrats to install an anti-democratic system that protected the interests of wealthy elites and then 250 years went by

New Yorkers deserve a government that delivers. We can do that. We have done it before and we are going to do it again.
