According to Vishnu Puran, king Bhagirath could finally do the Tarpan today, the day when Sun entered Makar Rashi in the name of his 60thousand uncles after bringing down Ganga on earth. Ganga from the Kamandalu of Brahmaji came down to earth via Jata of Mahadevji and entered through Himalay. So it’s very auspicious performing homage and tarpan for ancestors on Makar Sankranti day. From the first day of Uttarayan starts the day time of Devatas. The scientific significance of this age-old tradition is that the Sun finally restores its capacity after a long winter and cleanses our bodies off infections.
The most auspicious Kumbh Mela (snan) starts on Makar Sankranti ( Capricorn ). the most famous of them being the Ganga sagar Mela of Bengal. So taking a dip in holy river is must on this day.

While Thanksgiving has become a “cool” festival, thanks to Hollywood movies and sitcoms, Makar Sankranti is still to make it in the pop culture. However, few things are common between the two festivals with both being celebration of harvest, a day to greet family and friends, share a meal together and exchange pleasantries.
There are few important Sankrantis we celebrate specially when Sun goes to cardinal points (Aries, Cancer, Capricorn & Libra).
𝗞𝗮𝗿𝗸 𝗦𝗮𝗻𝗸𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗶 : It falls on July 16th starting the journey of Sun to the Dakshinayana, marking the transition of the Sun into the zodiac of Cancer or Karka Rashi. Dakshinayana is the night period for the Devas, Vishnuji goes to celestial sleep from this very day. Kark Sankranti is about charity and service to the ancestors. On this day, besides worshipping Lord Vishnu, devotees also do charity and service to the ancestors. Pitru traveled to Mother Earth during Dakshinayana; they then watch as their kids conduct the Shradh ceremony. The Shradh ritual is important because it helps the soul find divine calm. Charity and donation that we make during this period yield quick manifold result. Shila Pujan starts from Karka Sankranti.
𝗧𝘂𝗹𝗮 𝗦𝗮𝗻𝗸𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗶 : celebrated as annual menstruating phase of Mother Earth as Raja Parba or Ambubachi Mela in Eastern and North Eastern provinces of India. People worship Mata Bhudevi. Goddess Bhudevi prepares herself for the upcoming monsoon. It is celebrated for three days. Kamakhya temple remains closed during Mithun Sankranti to give the rest to the Goddess.
𝗧𝘂𝗹𝗮 𝗦𝗮𝗻𝗸𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗶 : The day Sun enters Tula rashi is celebrated as Tula Sankranti. Taking birth on this day is never so auspicious as in almost all shodashvarga chart Sun will be debilitated and the life of the person will be struggling in many ways. This is also called Garbhana Sankranti. Worshipping rising sun on this day gives long life span and disease free life. This is the day one should keep all the water pots and jars at home clean and filled with fresh water.
𝗠𝗲𝘀𝗵 𝗦𝗮𝗻𝗸𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗶 : Maha Vishuva Sankranti, is an auspicious day in the Hindu Solar calendar. The day marks the beginning of the Hindu New Year. The day sun enters Mesh rashi is called Mesh Sankranti. But astrologically this is not a very good phenomenon for the native. As sun will be in 0 to 1 degree of Ashwini nakshatra, crossing Gandamul. In almost all the shodash Varga chart Sun will be exalted. This Sun can make an extra ordinary personality or such rigid and egoistic Sun is damaging for managing life day by day. The festival is considered to be extremely auspicious and on this day, pooja or worship is offered to the Sun God who is the pivotal source for the survival of the entire universe.
𝗠𝗮𝗸𝗮𝗿 𝗦𝗮𝗻𝗸𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗶 : Lord Shiva once asked Nandi to go to Earth and ask the people to “have an oil bath everyday and food once a month.” However, the bovine, much confused told the people to “to have food everyday and have an oil bath once a month. Furious Shiva ordered Nandi to remain on Earth and help the people plough the fields as they would need more food grains now. Thus we worship the cow as a God-sent aid for agriculture on Makar Sankranti day. In many parts of India, people fly kites on this day. The symbolizes the desire to soar high and overcome obstacles in life. Additionally, people wear yellow clothing and decorate their homes with yellow flowers on Makar Sankranti day. The color yellow symbolizes the harvest season and the coming of spring.
