劉建仁 wrote an article on 黑狗 & 黑猫 in which he said both terms were used by Taiwanese to describe someone who’s modern, trendy, appearance-conscious—with no derogatory meaning. It’s hypothesized the Japanese viewed these characteristics in negative light

Interestingly, the 1932 Taiwanese-Japanese dictionary 臺日大辭典 had a more negative connotation for these two terms “Black Cat” (烏猫 o͘-niau) was “bad girl” (不良少女), while “Black Dog” (烏狗 o͘-káu) was “bad boy who chases after women” (不良少年)

I just learned “Black Cat” (烏猫/黑猫) emerged in Taiwanese pop culture in late 1920s as slang for “fashionable/modern girl”. It was often paired with “Black Dog” (烏狗/黑狗) for “stylish playboy” Both terms appeared in songs, records, dictionaries in 1930s

Here's another vintage Kikkoman ad from 1930s Taiwan during Japanese colonial period, which featured a "Black Cat Dance Song" (黑貓團跳舞歌)👯‍♀️👯‍♀️👯‍♀️ The lyrics are in stylized Taiwanese to be sung to traditional tune in "lightly brisk tempo" (小快板 Allegretto)

For @Telegraph, I wrote about the case of the missing masterpieces at Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery. Where are great works by William and May Morris, the city's radical Surrealists, Sandro Botticelli, Orazio Gentileschi, Simone Martini, Eugène Delacroix and Canaletto?

How did the Shanghai 1931 movie “love and duty” got lost and found back in 1993 in Uruguay? It was all thanks to Chinese educator Li Shizeng / 李石曾. New post on Shanghailander blog shanghailander.net/2026/05/h…
