It’s a really good article with a lot of terms and the idea of importance of Regional Parties Students often miss this and this is extremely relevant for both our Socio and GS syllabus Importance of Regionalism: Regional parties represent local identities, languages and cultural aspirations rather than being merely parochial Subaltern Assertion: They brought backward castes, regional communities and marginal groups into mainstream politics. (The article also mentions this word The Congress System We have it in our lectures but I’d urge everyone to research it Rajni Kothari ji had coined it) Back to the Article: Decline of one-party dominance created space for regional and caste-based political assertion. It led to Federalisation of Politics: National politics became shaped by state-level issues, not only by Delhi-centric narratives Civilisational Compact: Regional parties remind us that India’s unity is maintained not by cultural uniformity, but by accommodating regional diversity within democracy In this regard I have also added perspectives of Christophe Jaffrelot in our classes discussing if India is a civilisational state or not We need to raise our level Both in Socio and in GS And we need to keep it crisp That’s what I’m trying to do here through my classes and these articles 🙏 Let’s keep working hard

✅ What Are Flamingos : - Flamingos are large, long-legged wading birds known for their striking pink plumage and highly social nature. - They belong to the family Phoenicopteridae, the only family within the order Phoenicopteriformes. - These birds live in large colonies that can range from a few hundred individuals to several lakh birds, especially during feeding, migration, and breeding seasons. ✅ Natural Habitat : - Flamingos are commonly found in shallow saline and alkaline water bodies such as salt pans, lagoons, mudflats, mangrove creeks, and soda lakes. - In India, the two most prominent species are the Greater Flamingo and the Lesser Flamingo. - Their major breeding grounds lie in the Rann of Kachchh in Gujarat, from where they migrate to coastal regions of Tamil Nadu during the winter months. - Important wintering sites include Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, and Kanyakumari. - To protect migrating flamingos and their habitats, Dhanushkodi has been declared a dedicated flamingo sanctuary by the Tamil Nadu government.

✅ Conservation Status : - Lesser Flamingo (Phoeniconaias minor) : Near Threatened (IUCN Red List). - Greater Flamingo (Phoenicopterus roseus) : Least Concern (IUCN Red List). ✅ Key Characteristics : 1. Pink Colouration : - Flamingo chicks hatch with grey or white feathers. - Their characteristic pink colour develops over time through a diet rich in carotenoids. - Main food sources include algae, diatoms, crustaceans, and small molluscs. 2. Unique Feeding Mechanism : - Flamingos are specialized filter feeders. - They feed by lowering their curved bills upside down into shallow water. - Tiny comb-like structures inside the bill help separate food particles from water and mud. 3. Distinctive Flight and Resting Behaviour : - While flying, flamingos stretch both their necks and legs fully, creating a recognizable silhouette. - Their wings display prominent black markings during flight. - They frequently stand on one leg, a behaviour believed to help conserve body heat and reduce energy expenditure. 4. Mud Nest Construction : - Flamingos build raised, cone-shaped nests using mud in shallow wetlands. - These structures protect eggs from flooding and excessive moisture. - Both parents share incubation duties and later feed the chicks with nutrient-rich regurgitated food.

Awesome article by legendary Shri Dipankar Gupta ji He’s trying to understand why there are more dowry deaths in North India as compared to South He calls his understanding as Patriarchy Central idea being: That dowry deaths reflect male dominance, but the article shows patriarchy works differently across regions This can be summarised as below: Kinship System in North India: Marriage creates distance between bride’s natal family and marital family, increasing her dependence Hypergamy: The bride-giver is seen as lower than the bride-taker, making dowry a status payment Patrilocality: After marriage, the woman shifts to the husband’s home, weakening her support system and increasing vulnerability Regional Variation in South India: Cross-cousin/more familiar marriage patterns reduce bride-stranger status, helping explain lower dowry deaths The link even extends to Farmer Suicides : In North, farmer suicide is linked more to dowry burden; in South, it is linked more to debt, shame and borrowing from wife’s family It’s a beautiful article Do read and see terms like anuloma and pratiloma (even kanyadaan) UPSC has asked questions on these terms as well Will try to explain more on them in coming articles 🙏

Doston.. Tonight is one of those strange UPSC nights Some of you might be confident Some might be calculating the cut off for the zillionth time Some might have already convinced themselves of the worst Whatever happens tomorrow, I want you to remember one thing: a result can tell you whether you’ve cleared a stage or not, but it can never tell you your worth It’s way bigger than any good or bad result And I want to tell you that, whatever happens, I want to be there for you I’ve seen students miss the list by a few marks and lose it altogether I’ve seen students miss the list by a few marks and come back stronger than ever Just know that UPSC has a funny way of humbling us every now and then.. so try not to let anything get to your heart Tomorrow, if you clear, we’ll plan the road ahead And if you don’t, we’ll sit together, might even pause for a moment and analyse honestly, how to plan the next move No matter what the PDF says, just know that you’re not alone in this journey Whatever happens, we are in this together 🙏 – Shekhar Sir

Important Sociological Analysis from this article : Marriage as a Social Institution: Marriage is not just personal love; it organises sexuality, reproduction, inheritance, caste boundaries, labour and social legitimacy Patriarchy: Marriage often makes women’s dignity, security and respectability dependent on husband, in-laws and family approval Also from our notes: Murray Straus: Marriage licence as a hitting licence. (Domestic violence within marriage shows how the institution can become a space where control and violence are normalised as private family matter) Sexual Division of Labour: Women are expected to do unpaid domestic work, emotional labour, care work and adjustment, while men are treated as economic providers. Endogamy - M. N. Srinivas : Marriage maintains caste and community boundaries; relationships outside caste/community are seen as threats to family honour and social order. Dowry – V. Geetha/Bina Agarwal: Dowry reflects women’s weak inheritance rights and patriarchal property relations; it turns marriage into an economic transaction. Ogburn – Cultural Lag: Law may recognise individual choice, live-in relationships and women’s rights, but social norms around honour, marriage and family control change slowly.
