Today in 1964 Sandy Koufax made his 2nd ever cover appearance on Sports Illustrated. In 1964 Koufax was coming off the ‘63 season where he won the MVP, Cy Young, World Series. World Series MVP and the pitching Triple Crown. This newsstand copy graded at 9.8 is a pop 1 with none graded higher. I cleaned and pressed this copy for the owner. It sold in 2023 for $32,400.

This is the inaugural edition of Sports Illustrated for Kids featuring Michael Jordan from January 1989. It’s a very collectible piece, I’m cleaning and pressing this copy for one of my customers. Deep bends like this along the edge can be tricky to fix. Despite running this item through the press several times, I had to go back with a tacking iron to finish the job. Looks great now! If you’re using a 3rd party presser, be sure they do more than just throwing it in the press once and they’re done. You want someone who’s going to do whatever it takes to get the most out of each issue.

Sports Illustrated Magazine- April 1, 1968 Lew Alcindor/ Kareem Abdul-Jabbar @kaj33 Elvin Hayes @ElvinHayes44 📷Rich Clarkson The April 1, 1968, issue of Sports Illustrated features Lew Alcindor (Kareem Abdul-Jabbar) on the cover, documenting UCLA's 101–69 NCAA semifinal victory over the University of Houston. Titled "Lew's Revenge: The Rout of Houston," this issue covers the Bruins' avenging of their January 1968 regular-season loss to Elvin Hayes and the Cougars. Lew Alcindor (19 pts, 18 rbs) completely turned the tables on Elvin Hayes (10 pts, 5 rbs), outscoring and outrebounding him. The Locker Room Motivation: Lew Alcindor(later Kareem Abdul-Jabbar) reportedly kept the previous Sports Illustrated cover—which showed Elvin Hayes scoring over him—taped inside his locker as motivation for the rematch. A "Blurry" Atmosphere: Photos from the "Revenge" game often show a "blue haze" in the arena; this was actually caused by the heavy amount of fan smoking permitted inside the Los Angeles Sports Arena at the time. The "Alcindor Rule": Alcindor was so dominant that the NCAA banned dunking after the 1967 season to try to level the playing field. He played this entire "revenge" season without being allowed to dunk, relying instead on his legendary "skyhook."

This is Johnny Bench and his 1st cover appearance on Time magazine from 1972. This piece is much better than his 1st Sports Illustrated cover which he shared with five other players. I’m cleaning and pressing this copy for a fellow collector. Cleaning and pressing can’t fix every problem, but it can fix a lot. This before and after pic is a great example of that. Lots of flaws fixed and some permanent flaws remain.
