The Nigerian entertainment industry is in mourning following the passing of veteran actor, theatre legend, and respected academic, Baba Kola Oyewo.
Born on March 27, 1946, in Oba-Ile, Osun State, Baba Kola Oyewo dedicated over sixty years of his life to the growth of theatre, film, and education in Nigeria. He began his artistic journey in 1964 with the renowned Oyin Adejobi Theatre Group and went on to become one of the most revered figures in Yoruba theatre and Nollywood.
He gained widespread acclaim for his iconic role as Odewale in Ola Rotimi’s classic stage play, The Gods Are Not to Blame, a performance that cemented his place among Africa’s finest theatre practitioners.
Over the years, he appeared in several notable productions including Saworoide, Sango, Koseegbe, Super Story, and many acclaimed Yoruba-language films that helped shape the Nigerian movie industry.
Outside the screen and stage, Baba Kola Oyewo was also a respected scholar and mentor. He earned a PhD in Drama from the University of Ibadan and lectured at institutions such as Obafemi Awolowo University, Redeemer’s University, and Elizade University, where he inspired countless students and young creatives.
Through his remarkable contributions as an actor, educator, playwright, and cultural icon, Baba Kola Oyewo leaves behind a legacy that will continue to influence generations in Nigeria’s theatre, film, and academic spaces.
