"Keir Starmer ruined many people's careers." Speaking to The Spectator's Tim Shipman, Kemi Badenoch says what was most striking about the Mandelson scandal was how willing the Prime Minister was to throw people under a bus, and how it exposed his true character. Kemi Badenoch was interviewed last night by The Spectator‘s Political Editor, Tim Shipman, in front of a live audience at Church House in Westminster. Much of what the Conservative leader said was a retreading over familiar ground. The Conservative party was a ‘distressed asset’ when she inherited the leadership, she said, but is now getting a second hearing. Badenoch said, of the economy, that the country must cut spending before it cuts taxes, and that it is time that the government gets out of the way of business. The Conservative party was ‘for the people who get up every day’, she insisted, and that what is needed in politics is more common sense. ✍️ John Power Article | spectator.com/article/what-k…

On Tuesday 2 June at 7pm, join us here for a livestream of our next event, Enoch Powell’s complicated legacy. Spectator Editor Michael Gove and assistant editor Madeline Grant will sit down with Simon Heffer, author of Like the Roman: The Life of Enoch Powell, described as ‘the best conservative narrative of postwar British politics’. They will explore how Powell’s early life and formidable intellect shaped his thinking, examine how he became a model for populist rhetoric and discuss why his legacy is central to understanding today’s political divisions and the rise of political parties such as Reform.
