Photographed in Nanaimo. Are cherry blossoms native to Vancouver Island? How did they get here?
Hundreds of flowering cherry trees were given as a gift from Japan, to be placed in Stanley Park in honour of Japanese Canadians who served in World War II.
Cherry blossoms are said to be native toΒ the Himalayas. These flowers likely originated somewhere in Eurasia before migrating to Japan.
ThoughΒ they are not native to Canada, these trees have incredible wildlife value and benefit the ecosystem of High Park. The small fruits of the Yoshino and Akebono cherry trees are a source of food for small mammals and many resident songbirds, including American Robins and Northern Cardinals.
Cherry Blossom trees, have edible flowers andΒ the bark can be used for many medicinal purposes. With anti-inflammatory features, cherry blossoms can be used to reduce swelling and irritation on the skin. It also provides soothing and rejuvenating qualities,Β making it a popular skincare element.
Apart from skincare and face care products, people also use Cherry Blossom in shampoos because of its revitalising capabilities thatΒ strengthen the hair follicles. Moreover, as Cherry Blossom has cleansing properties, it can effectively clean your scalp of dandruff and dirt buildup.
