Retweeting this because it's important and people seem to forget the deeper issue here. This isn't just about a movie being "banned" or a ride closing. This is about the villification of actual people's culture and the suppression of their oral traditions.
This isn't just a movie. They have irreparably damaged the reputation of actual people's cultural heritage. They are sending the message that these characters and stories that have survived generations of suppression and colonialism are bad. That's not ok.

Since Cars is 20 years old now, I watched it with my mom and "she just likes me for my body" still absolutely fries her every single time.

So uh, can we make fandoms about enjoying thing the fandom is based around again and not about what politics you align with? Thanks.

I find it so sad how theme parks just aren't treated as art when they absolutely should be. This stuff deserves to be preserved and viewed by future generations, but instead, it often ends up destroyed and discarded like trash. Ofc not everything can be saved, but come on.
I wish they saved stuff like this instead of just demolishing it. They could open a museum or something for it like the old Vegas neon sign museum! I feel like it would do really well in Orlando!

I think what makes it extra frustrating is how many Disney influencers know this, but refuse to drop the "Splash bad" act, because keeping their media pass is more important to them than standing up for the truth. It is their utter selfishness that makes my blood boil.
Splash Mountain and Brer Rabbit aren’t problematic. The way the fanbase and the Disney company treat the topic as this irredeemable boogeyman IS problematic. Every time we try to have a discussion about it these people are immediately shutting it down with blatant lies.

Dinosaur fans didn't get slandered as racists for being sad about their favourite ride closing. There's a huge difference. Splash fans have every right to be angry about how they and the thing they loved were treated by both the company and the community as a whole.

It is crazy but it seems they can’t let it go for some reason. The ride has been closed for years now like get over it😭 i loved dinosaur but you don’t see me crying online everyday for years about it. I’m happy to see change in the parks!

When Disney officially acknowledges it again, it will no longer be problematic Because people need faceless corporations to give them permission to enjoy things now.
Just let one new pin drop and we can be free. That’s all it will take. One new pin, everyone goes crazy, they realize how lucrative it is and start releasing more stuff and then we’ll be out of the woods at last.

Can't lie, getting real tired of correcting people whenever they falsely claim "Splash Mountain takes place during slavery" but also someone has to do it because we can't keep letting this shit spread and I feel like we're just stuck in an infinite loop please help-

Sometimes I randomly remember the fact that Angry Birds, arguably THE most iconic and influential mobile game ever made, the game that literally saved Rovio from bankruptcy... Can no longer be downloaded and played legally. That is just mind blowing to me.

The most heartbreaking thing is the fact that Disney, y'know, the company once renowned for it's strict quality control, think this is acceptable programming to have on their platform. The bar for children's entertainment has never been set so low. It's embarassing.
the state of American animation is legitimately heartbreaking it might as well just be sock puppets at this point (that would actually be more inventive)

This is so sad to see. Lost Continent (soon to be literal) was a beautifully themed land that I will miss very much. It's always upsetting to see yet another original theme park land neglected and subsequently taken away in favor of even more IP.
Goodbye sweet prince

It will always astound me how the people who are for censoring these stories honestly think they're the good guys.

I just hope at some point Disney will stop hiding the Brers. While discussions surrounding SotS and Uncle Remus are understandable, erasing the Brer Rabbit stories is effectively erasing generations of authentic African culture which also became American culture.

Kids' media is always held at a lower standard than adult media and it's infuriating. We say kids need to eat healthy and exercise to support their growing bodies, so why doesn't the same logic apply to the media they consume as well? Their growing minds are just as important.
I hate this argument because it's ultimately an excuse for low standards. Children are in some of the most formative years of their lives, values and inspirations from the media they consume, which makes quality arguably more important for them than it is for adults

Reminder that Disney execs called this man "racist" and silenced his suggestions for new projects featuring the Uncle Remus stories. Again. I will reiterate. You do not hate this company enough.
Floyd Norman will receive an honorary Oscar. He was the first black animator at Disney and had a 65-year run at the studio working on films such as ‘Sleeping Beauty’, ‘The Jungle Book’, ‘Mulan’ and ‘Toy Story 2’.

Can you even call this movies "live action" if they're 90% animated anyway? Just because everything looks realistic doesn't make it live action.
New look at Tamatoa in the live-action ‘MOANA’ remake. In theaters on July 10.

There's a difference between a company doing something ballsy and a company just doing something plain fucking stupid. The following image is an example of the latter:

If Splash was still here, no one would bat an eyelid and we'd probably still have a few other defunct favourites around too. Closing it benefitted absolutely no one, neither short term or long term. It made everything worse for everyone, and we have every right to be mad.
It’s so funny how people want us to brush it off when that’s exactly what they would have done if Disney just let Splash be and didn’t have a kneejerk reaction.

They were preparing themselves for a fallout that was never going to happen. People act like the Br'er theming was always problematic for guests since day 1. It wasn't. It never was. No guests questioned it until Disney themselves made it seem like an issue that needed fixing.
I see a lot of revisionism about this. They were the ones that created the narrative that it was “problematic”. There was no “storm” coming, and the way they dealt with it created more negative buzz than if they did nothing at all.

It makes me sad how many people straight up refuse to even try Skylanders, purely because of ONE divisive character re-design. They're seriously missing out on some of the most fun, creative and innovative games of the 2010s.
It's funny seeing people hate on Skylanders because of Spyro's redesign when Skylanders easily has some of the best fantsay creature designs out there

The fact this isn't the first time a harmless Disney attraction has been called a "monument" to some kind of political evil is incredible. This phenomenon needs to be studied, I want to know how this unhinged mentality starts.
If you think that Liberty Square at the Magic Kingdom is a “monument to fascism” you have a serious issue
